Whitefriars & Power House dominate – Division 1 Women’s Round 15 Review

The penultimate round of the Division 1 Women’s season has been completed, with teams making their final push towards the end of the home-and-away season.

Power House, Whitefriars, Monash Blues and Ormond all secured convincing victories in Round 15, with plenty of strong individual performances across the four contests.

La Trobe 1.5 (11) def by Power House 8.6 (54)

Power House continued their strong finish to the season with a comprehensive 43-point victory over La Trobe.

The visitors controlled the contest for much of the afternoon, eventually running away with a comfortable victory.

The Trobers worked hard throughout the contest, with Tara Chetcuti, Jessica Lowry, Stephanie Castagnini, Claire Wilson, Thara Sar and Matilda Wilson among their best performers.

Castagnini provided La Trobe’s only major of the afternoon, while the side continued to compete despite being held to just one goal.

Power House had plenty of contributors across the ground, with Zoe Uwland, Alice McAlea, Sinead Doorley, Joelly Firmin, Rebecca Foley and Lauren Boyle all named among their best.

Boyle was particularly influential in front of goal, booting four majors, while Georgia McHolmes added two. Alli Charles and Uwland also hit the scoreboard with a goal each.

Power House’s eight-goal performance ensured it finished the afternoon with a comfortable margin, while La Trobe will look to finish their season strongly in the final round.

Whitefriars 6.9 (45) def Oakleigh 0.0 (0)

Whitefriars produced the most dominant defensive performance of the round, keeping Oakleigh scoreless in a 45-point victory.

The Friars controlled the contest from start to finish and denied Oakleigh any opportunity to hit the scoreboard.

Meave Bohanna led the way for Whitefriars, kicking three of her side’s six goals and proving a constant threat inside forward 50.

Bohanna was also named among Whitefriars’ best alongside Caitlin Ryan, Bella Giannangelo, Kaitlyn Wallace, Natasha Hoezda and Hollie McCormack.

The Krushers battled hard despite being unable to score, with Lily Firth, Elise Kenna, Kaitlyn Sidopoulos, Gisselle Jones-Wilson, Lorri Gunn and Tayla Halvy among the side’s better players.

The clean sheet will be a major positive for Whitefriars as the season approaches its conclusion, while Oakleigh will be hoping to respond in the final round.

Monash Blues 8.3 (51) def Marcellin 5.5 (35)

Monash Blues claimed an important 16-point victory over Marcellin in a competitive contest.

The Blues built enough scoreboard pressure to hold off Marcellin and secure the four points.

Hannah Konstanty and Ruby Rosas were the major contributors in front of goal, with both players booting three majors.

Konstanty and Rosas were also among Monash’s best, joined by Emily Conroy, Ruby Hancock, Alice McGinty and Charlotte Fowler.

Marcellin remained competitive throughout the contest, with Charlotte McGilp, Alana Pane, Jasmine Getson, Laura Robertson, Ebony Spencer and Olivia Frost named among their best.

Jennae Wakefield provided two of Marcellin’s five goals as the visitors continued to fight until the final siren.

The victory gives Monash Blues another positive result heading into the final round, while Marcellin will have one final opportunity to finish the season on a high.

Ormond 7.5 (47) def Old Carey 2.2 (14)

Ormond continued their strong finish to the season with a convincing 34-point victory over Old Carey.

The home side kicked seven goals to two across the afternoon, running out as strong victors.

Isabella Gietzmann was a standout for the Monders, booting three goals, while Izabela Ignjic added two majors to help lead the scoreboard charge.

Tayla McAlroy, Gietzmann, Kitty Smyth, Olivia Steinfort, Isabella Di Lecce and Ignjic were all named among Ormond’s best performers.

The Panthers struggled to generate enough scoring opportunities but had several strong contributors despite the result, with Sadie Chun, Lucy Wynne, Francesca Anderson, Maya Seabury, Elin Simpson and Sarah Grummitt named among their best.

The result gives Ormond plenty of momentum heading into the final round, while Old Carey will be looking to respond and finish their campaign strongly.
