PREMIER-PREMIER C WRAP

In the last week of football before the bye, teams were keen to bank another four points as once again, despite the strong winds, the really ugly weather stayed away across Melbourne. But lower ranked sides have started to produce with less than half the season remaining.
In West Essendon, St Bernard’s made a statement dispatching Old Trinity by 69 points at the Snakepit. The St Bernard’s forwards of Chad Jones (3 goals), Andrew Merrington (2), David Wall (3) and Jess Mununizio (3) were too much for a depleted Old Trinity defence. Despite this, the best man on the ground was Simon Caven who took mark after mark stopping Old Trinity attacking efforts.
Old Xaveians hosted Old  Scotch at Xavier College and the home side were made to sweat all the way to the end as Old Xaverians held on to win by a goal.  Handley booted his customary three goals in a result that condenses the ladder from fourth to tenth.
Bottom side Old Brighton travelled to Beaumaris and handed the Sharks a fourth consecutive loss. The Tonners home by 11 points, Anthony, Karayannis and Dewar all kicked three whilst Murton booted four in a losing side. However, the Tonners remain at the foot of the table as St Bedes/Mentone Tigers also won today.
The Tigers clinched a 26 point win over De La Salle to claim the La Sallian Cup at Brindisi St. It was another gargantuan display from Tom Humphrey who if umpires paid votes to defenders would surely be in Woodrow contention. However, the problem for De La Salle is that when a defender is your best player it means the ball is at the wrong end, and so it proved. The Tigers securing an important third win of the year.
University Blacks bounced back with a win, defeating Collegians by 92 points at University Oval. Collegians didn’t score in the second half as Black ran rings around the Lions. The Blacks had 12 players kick goals in the win.

In Premier B, the upset of the round was Mazenod’s thrilling one point victory over the table topping University Blues. Just as it had in their Round 4 loss to Old Ivanhoe, poor kicking again costing the Blues, as they booted 6.15 for the day.  The result doesn’t change Blues advantage at the top as they still sit a comfortable two games clear.
Old Carey moved into second spot courtesy of their 54 point win at Old Ivanhoe. The Panthers had four goals from Fordham, whilst Old Ivanhoe are now three games and percentage from safety and a return to Premier C is looking likely.
Old Melburnians’ resurgence continues as they beat a top four side for the third week in a row. This week OM’s cruised past AJAX by 39 points to close the gap to the four. Whilst still in sixth spot Melburnians are only a game from third spot as their percentage is very healthy.
St Kevin’s also bounced back in a big way with a 58 point win over Caulfield Grammarians. Henry Parkes booted five goals in the win that sees SKOB move to third.
There is something about Fitzroy and Old Haileybury that produces climactic finishes. Earlier this year they played out a draw, and we were looking likely for a repeat of that until the Roys scored a late goal to salute by six points.

The upsets continued in Premier C, as Peninsula made the longest trip in the section  to PEGS and came away with the four points. Khallouf booted five goals in a losing side as the Pirates held on to win by four points despite not kicking a goal in the final term.
Banyule came oh so close to securing a season defining win at Old Camberwell, however it was the Wellers that prevailed by six points.
Oakleigh had no trouble dealing with Ormond as the Krushers ran out 92 point winners over the Monders. Five goals to Hard and four to Cloke were just two of the main contributors for Oakleigh.
Monash Blues had an ugly 17 point win over Parkdale Vultures in a low scoring affair.
Hampton Rovers bounced back to the winners list with a thumping 69 point win over Marcellin at Boss James.
