St John’s Old Boys’ Football Club was formed in 1980 and competed in the VAFA with the St John’s College Oval as the home ground.

When the College Oval required significant upgrade works in 1982, the team shifted its home base to Power Road Doveton and the club changed its name to Doveton Amateurs St John’s Old Collegians.

In 1988 the club had some success with a reserves premiership and the senior side runners-up. At the conclusion of the 1990 season, St John’s Old Collegians Football Club and Doveton formed separate teams, with the Old Collegians remaining in the VAFA.

The new St John’s Old Collegians Football Club was formed in 1991 and has since that time competed in the VAFA at Thomas Carroll Reserve.

JOCs experienced success with the senior team being runners-up in 1993 (F1 Division), runners-up in 1994 (E Division), premiers in 2005 (Division 3), runners-up in 2010 (Division 3) and premiers 2011 (Division 2).

In 2016, St John’s earnt elevation back up to Division 1 but were unable to complete the fairytale of a returning with a premiership after going down to Preston Bullants by eight points in the Division 2 decider. However, Glenn Costas skipped away with the Fullerton Medal with 25 votes – 10 more than his closest rival.
