Round 13 of the 2023 VAFA Season is TAC Road Safety Round and the VAFA is again driving the “Band Together” message which will see all clubs and their players, volunteers and coaches wear blue armbands to honour lives impacted by road trauma and promote road safety.
Across Victoria more than 1000 AFL clubs will wear the blue armbands which feature QR codes to an online hub of stories of people touched by road trauma which includes impactful videos from Old Brighton’s Men’s captain Harry Hill and St Kevin’s Old Boys Mitch Wallis.
This year, 165 people have been tragically killed on Victorian roads – a 28% increase on the 129 lives lost at this time in 2022. Road deaths in regional areas are a continued concern, with 94 fatalities this year compared to 73 at the same time in 2022. The number of people aged 21-to-39 who have died on the roads has risen by more than 20.
Head of AFL Victoria Ben Kavenagh added that “Road safety is so important and relevant to every Victorian and with community football players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters spending considerable time driving – Road Safety Round presents the ideal platform to convey a powerful message.”
Any VAFA clubs who are yet to collect their TAC Armbands and TAC Merchandise kits can do so at VAFA Headquarters.
