VAFA’s annual Media Day is always a pre-season highlight. Players rock up to Elsternwick Park with their game faces on, pumped for a jam-packed day of filming to create some seriously entertaining content. Whether it’s a hilarious club anecdote or an energetic dance routine, our VAFA women always deliver. Here are our the top 5 media day moments from last season!

  1. Canteen cravings

With footy grounds and clubrooms lying dormant this winter, many have been longing for their weekend tuck shop treat. Whether it’s a pie eaten between cheers from the sidelines, a hot drink to thaw out freezing hands, or the victorious post-win soft drink can to replenish sugars, the canteen never disappoints. Heated debates can often arise from discussions around the best item, with players, club admins and spectators alike coming head-to-head to defend the superiority of their go-to order. In an attempt to get to the bottom of this, we asked some of the VAFA stars about their favourite canteen snack.

  1. Where’s Chicken?

VAFA HQ is renowned for its floor to ceiling windows which look out onto our beloved Elsternwick Park. Turns out this view not only makes for a scenic interview background, but also provides an opportunity for a classic blooper reel moment. Seeing an opening for hilarious interference, Hannah ‘Chicken’ Elliot (Williamstown CYMS) decided to make an surprise appearance in Jemima Savage’s interview (MCC).

  1. Get pumped

Who doesn’t love a good pump up song? Bluetooth speaker and Spotify are all you need to turn the clubhouse changerooms from a concrete box of sweat, nervous tension and footy boots into a Berlin-style raging dancefloor. Many squads have a carefully selected tune or entire playlist to get the adrenaline pumping as a part of their pre-game rituals or evening training sessions. Anyone looking to update their pump up playlist can take note of these favs from our women’s teams. No doubt the Brunswick squad become their own renegades of funk when rage against the machine starts backing them up. Let’s not forget the Oakleigh Krushers had planned to run onto the field to Kanye in true WWE entrance style, hopefully we get to see that come round one next year!

  1. Go-to moves

Watch out Melbourne! Make room for these ladies when clubs reopen, because with moves like these they will be tearing it up on the d floor. Eliza Millen (Monash Blues) can handle the congestion of any crowd having mastered ‘the traffic controller.’ Hannah Elliot (Williamstown CYMS) is hoping to use this as her audition for Taylor Swift’s back up dance – a lifelong dream of hers. Despite splitting her lip open during her last attempt, Libby Graham (Old Geelong) managed to pull off the worm with remarkable finesse, showing her dedication to this iconic move.

  1. Dance battle

Taking out the top spot is the epic Brittney Spears dance off. On-field club rivalries were momentarily forgotten as our VAFA women banded together to do battle on the dancefloor. With choreography and rhythmic talent of this calibre, producers will undoubtedly come knocking to film the next Step Up sequel.
