VCFL TOO STRONG FOR VAFA

VCFL TOO STRONG FOR VAFA

Andrew Leonard

The U19 VCFL representative side won a tough contest at Sportscover Arena today against VAFA Big V team by 50 points today.
In beautiful sunny conditions for teh first three quarters the Ammos wasted their use of the breeze in the first quarter to only manage the four behinds.
A goal to Henry Parkes (St Kevins) in the second quarter against the flow of play was a good sign but the VCFL still led at half time by 20 points.
In  a low scoring game the Ammos came out firing at the start of the third quarter. Goals to Gene van den Broek (Old Scotch), Alex Croft (Collegians) and Shaun Glennen (St Bedes / Mentone Tigers) had them within 4 points.
However it was the ability for the VCFL to run and carry into the breeze to kick a couple of late goals to carry a 11 point lead into the final term.
The final quarter was dominated by the marking talls and particularly Matt Taberner who was the best forward from both side all day. Taberner was awared the medal for best player by Owen Lalor and his coaching staff kicked three goals.
He was ably assisted by Sam Dobsen who also managed three goals.
For the home side Brede Seccull (Old Haileyburians) was the most consistent performer all afternoon winning the best honours from his own coaching staff whilst Dan Garside (St Bedes / Mentone Tigers) won the best from the VCFL coaches.
In the end the VAFA were held goalless in the first and last quarters and that cost them. The VCFL kicked six unanswered goals to none in the final quarter to win 12.14.86 to 4.12.36 by 50 points.
The VCFL now lead this current series of games 3-2.
