Come for the Festival, Stay for the Masters

By Joe Pignataro · June 28, 2022
Come for the Festival, Stay for the Masters

While the cold of winter sets in across Melbourne, the VAFA’s Footy Festivals are continuing to be on show and fire you up and keep you warm.

After the success of the Holmesglen Under 19 Division 1 Men’s competition at Elsternwick Park, this weekend the VAFA is showcasing its freshest men’s section as part of its ever growing competition.

The Mecwacare Masters Footy Festival will take to Elsternwick Park this Sunday, July 3. Proving that age is merely a number and a terrific opportunity to showcase Masters Football in a standalone time slot.

The focus of the Masters format is to provide an alternative to traditional football competitions, with the VAFA offering the opportunity to play to an over 35 age group.

VAFA Club Development Manager, Sean Walker has been instrumental in initiating the Masters Competition and driving the concept behind the Footy Festival on Sunday “In this, the first year of a VAFA Masters competition it has been great to see the format be embraced by the 4 clubs and 5 teams involved.” he told VAFA Media.

“The Masters competition is flexible in nature with teams playing every second week with the ability to fixture Friday games, Sunday games or Saturday games. The Masters competition is a great way for clubs to continue to engage players within the football club who can’t commit to football every weekend.”

On Sunday, games will be played back to back on Elsternwick Park’s main oval. The action kicks off at 12.30pm with Oakleigh playing host to De La Salle, before St Kevin’s face Marcellin Bald Eagles (Blue) at 2.30pm.

For those who can’t make it to VAFA HQ to see the action unfold, you can tune in through the VAFA Website & VAFA Facebook Page as My Sport Live is there to provide live-streaming coverage of both games. Complete with VAFA great Simon Petch behind the microphones along with Josh Heriot and Ethan Mills.

For Walker, Not only is the day about bringing awareness to the Masters Competition, it’s also about garnering interests from other VAFA clubs to consider bringing their own past players back and pull the boots on one more time “the VAFA is looking to expand the competition to 6 teams in 2022 and would be interested in discussing any clubs desire to submit a Masters Team in 2023.”

“The current Masters competition is a Men’s competition but if there was enough interest the VAFA would also like to explore a Woman’s competition in upcoming seasons” said Walker.
