It was another fantastic night of vote counting for VAFA Best and Fairest Awards on 96.5 Inner FM last night. Counts For Premier B, Premier C and Division 1 were held live on air and the junior best and fairest winners of U19 Premier, U19 Section 2 and U19 Section 3 were also announced just after 8pm.
Old Trinity captain Brendan Iezzi won his second Moore Medal and his third VAFA league best and fairest award. Iezzi was the 2009 Moore Medallist, the 2011 Woodrow Medallist and now adds the 2013 Moore Medal to his cabinet. It is the fifth time an Old Trinity player has won the Moore Medal after Iezzi in 2009, Ramsden 1999, Rogers 1992 and Albion 1991. Iezzi polled a monstrous 33 votes, polling in an incredible 14 out of 18 matches.
The Zachariah Medal was shared for the first time since 2002 as Marcellin vice captain Jarrod Carlson won back to back awards, this time sharing it with Mazenod captain Tim Bourbon. The pair tied on 19 votes with both failing to poll in the final round of the year. Carlson is the only player from Marcellin to win a Zachariah and now he has two. Bourbon became the second player from Mazenod to win a Zachariah after teammate Michael Chamberlain won one in 2010.
The Division 1 count for the L.S. Pepper Medal was won my Hampton Rovers captain Leigh Fletcher. Fletcher polled 31 votes to win by 10 votes from Old Geelong’s Tristan Mountjoy. It is the second time Fletcher has won a VAFA league best and fairest after he claimed the 2010 Moore Medal in Premier B. Fletcher becomes the third Rovers player to win a Pepper Medal after Home Le Grand won in 1994 and before him Ken Trinnick won three in a row from 1933-35.
The junior medal counts were also held with the winners announced on air. Claiming the U19 Premier C.R Newbury Medal was Brett Denton of St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.
The G.W. McTaggert Medal for the best and fairest in U19 Section 2 was won by Sam Hibbins of Collegians.
The I.A. Brown Medal for the best and fairest in U19 Section 3 was won by Northern Blues young gun Moustafa Hammoud.
These medal winners plus those announced last night will all be presented at the Woodrow Medal and VAFA Awards night on Wednesday 18th September at Crown’s River Room.
