Mauro Borcich lost his battle with throat cancer this week, but he will forever remain one of the greatest to come out of North Old Boys.
Identifying the greatest player from a club is often subjective but when it comes to North Old Boys, the consensus is unanimous that Mauro Borcich sits at least amongst the top couple.
As a player, Mauro won four club best and fairest’s, was club captain, played in six A Section Grand Finals – unfortunately for NOBs they only won two of those – and was a regular for the Big V in representative football.
VAFA Board Member and former North Old Boys champion Bruno Conti said, “He is one of the top 2-3 players ever to play at the club and was a fantastic mentor for me and my peer group when we all started playing at NOBS, he was only young and even in his sixties was Mr Indestructible, on and off the field, think of Darren Millane, it is quite incredible he has died.”
Mauro’s illness escalated its effects over the past two weeks and he passed peacefully with family by his side.
Not only was Mauro one of NOBS greatest ever and highly decorated players but he was an outstanding person to all that knew him.
The VAFA and North Old Boys St Patricks community send condolences to Vicki, Blake and the extended family.
