The VAFA’s senior representative side assembled for the first time last Thursday night at Collingwood’s Westpac Centre in preparation for their match against the Northern Football League.
The squad had a new feel to it as new co-coaches Cameron Roberts and Matt Kempton ran the first of four sessions which included plenty of fresh faces in the squad. Keen to impress the selectors in their first session with the senior squad were Harry Tinney (Old Trinity), Peter Rourke and Huw Lacey (Uni Blacks), Daniel Corp (Hampton Rovers), Jason Kelly and Josh Cowan (Mazenod).
They were joined by Big V regulars, Tom Caven and Adam Bentick (St Bernard’s), Brendan Iezzi (Old Trinity), Lachlan McQueen Miscamble and Ben Smithwick (Old Carey) and Matt Handley (Old Xaverians).
Roberts and Kempton alternated the drills, which included a simple ‘getting to know your teammate’ activity at the start. Kempton, whilst not available for the match day will be very much involved over the preparation period of the campaign.
The other members of the coaching panel have also been confirmed as Richard Hosking, Leigh Carlson, and Xavier Moloney as the assistant coaches with he team to be managed by Mick Overman.
The VAFA are playing the Northern Football League in the AFL Victoria Metro Championships match on Saturday 28 MArch at Carlton’s Ikon Park (Princes Park) at 3.15pm in the headline match of the day. The VAFA are the current defending champions after they beat the Eastern Football League last year.
