The step up in competition proved to be too demanding for the promoted Division 1 duo, Williamstown CYMS and Therry Penola in Round 1. The CY’s and the Lions were both handsomely defeated by experienced premier footballing sides and perhaps will take longer than first thought for these two to adapt. Marcellin delivered Williamstown a 124-point loss while Premier B demoted pair Old Haileyburians and Old Ivanhoe secured victories in their first games in a new section. Oakleigh and Peninsula OB dined out with big opening round wins away from home.
Williamstown’s first game at Fearon since the Premiership couldn’t have gone much worse. The CY’s were within two-points of Marcellin at the first term break but their joy ended here. The Eagles displayed no remorse and lathered an insurmountable score giving Willy a welcome to remember. Jeremiah Antypas’ leapt to front the goal tally leaderboard, finishing with 12 goals for the Eagles. Daniel McMahon (6) and Jonathan Bortolotto (5) chipped in with bags of their own in the 124-point victory. Antypas was voted best on with his dozen goals.
Therry Penola received the same treatment as Williamstown did and copped a rare beating. Old Haileyburians outlined the difference in standard of football from Premier B to Division 1 kicking six unanswered goals in the first term and four more in the second on the back of a strong breeze. The Lions made use of the wind advantage with five goals to zip in the third including Jarrod Bannister kicking his fourth just before three quarter time. Therry believed they had a chance but when Corey Bannister and Brock Egglestone both left the field due to injury, Haileybury steamrolled the visitors with seven goals in the final term. John Nicolopoulos ended with five goals for the Bloods, Jimmy Paul winning best on honours.
Old Ivanhoe Grammarians controlled the opening game without any hiccups and sealed a comfortable victory over Monash Blues. The Hoes took charge early in the first, never letting the Blues shift momentum. Defensively Old Ivanhoe torched Monash – forcing clangers and making them pay at the other end. By halftime Monash totalled 12-points and Hoes’ 27-point buffer felt untouchable. The margin seeped each change until reaching 50 at the final siren. Bradley Thompson led Ivanhoe’s’ offense with four goals along with Alex Vella claiming B.O.G.
Old Camberwell Grammarians held their own for the first half at home but were unable to withhold Oakleigh’s Krushing mentality. The Krushers sunk their teeth into Old Camberwell early drawing first blood and dominating early play but the home side fought back to pull the margin to 3-points. Oakleigh did the same again in the second but again faded late in the term to keep the game within two kicks. After Halftime the Krushers fixed their first half mishaps and stormed past Old Camberwell to slot 14 goals to three in the second half. Aaron Cloke tallied six majors for the victors, Shane Borland earned Oakleigh’s best player with decisive possession and two goals.
Peninsula Old Boys did it easy against PEGS in Essendon winning by 77-points. The Pirates’ first term score mirrored PEGS’ final as the Pirates kicked five goals in the first with PEGS only scrapping the same in four quarters. Peninsula kept PEGS at bay and slowly ticked over the scoreboard in the second and third terms before cementing the victory in the last, kicking six more and keeping the opposition scoreless. Oscar Whitty was deservedly named best afield having won the game off his own boot with the game high six goals.
This week, Old Ivanhoe host PEGS, expect the Hoes to finish Round 2, 2-0 and defeat PEGS. Old Camberwell Grammarians play Williamstown CYMS, the CY’s will respond from last weeks thrashing and will do enough to get the four points against Camberwell. Therry Penola face Oakleigh at home, the Krushers already look like the bullish team in Premier C, but Therry have yet to show the section their capabilities. Tipping Oakleigh to continue winning in forcible fashion. The Division’s frontrunner, Marcellin take on Monash Blues where the Eagles will again show their dominance. Old Haileyburians travel to Peninsula OB, both with momentum heading into Round 2, backing the Bloods to bring home the four points.
