With the ladder suddenly split in two, there will be an urgency amongst the bottom 5 to start closing the gap to the leading pack. Here’s a closer look at
Two of the new teams to the section continue to set the pace in Division 1. Both are from different entry points but it makes for a tantalising prospect when Kew and Ormond eventually meet in Round 10. Of course there is a lot of football to be played between then and now.
Kew continued on their merry way with a comfortable 76 point win over the winless Yarra Valley. These two clubs would remember each other from Division 3 days in 2012 when it was the Bushrangers that were beating up on everyone. This time around the Bears were in better shape and the human highlight reel Andrew Brazzale bagged a brilliant 8 goals.
Ormond too made light work of what is proving to be a disappointing North Old Boys/St Pat’s. The Monders did it in cruise control as they recorded a 68 point win over the visitors. Rob Chisholm kicked six goals as the Monders sit on top with one eye on an immediate return to Premier C.
The game of the day was at Turner Road Reserver where Old Mentonians came from behind to win a one point thriller over Prahran Assumption on ANZAC Day. In a brilliant high scoring game of amateur football, the Panthers booted five last quarter goals to pip the Two Blues at the post. The loss leaves PA without a win in 2015, whilst the Panthers move their season to 2-1. Josh Hogarth was immense for Prahran Assumption with six goals whilst Dustan Mills kicked five of his own for Old Mentonians.
The upset of the round was undoubtedly Bulleen Templestowe’s dismantling of the previously untouchable St Mary’s Salesian. The Bullants won their first game of the year in fine style at Ted Ajani by a comfortable 49 points. Kristian Cherbakof brought his own ball on the way to a sensational nine goal haul.
OGs went 2-1 with a solid 28 point away win at Whitefriars. The young Friars side struggled to contain Old Geelong forward Jack McMeel who slotted five goals. Whilst the Friars were in this game until late, the OGs seemingly always had control.
