VAFA supports the Pride Cup

On Sunday 17th of May, footy played an important role in social inclusion and equality.

The 2nd Annual Pride Cup was held between Yarra Glen and Warburton on Sunday, 17 May, which also coincided with IDAHOT (International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia).

During the pre-match luncheon, special guests, which included Jeff Kennett, Matt Finnis, Dr Pippa Grange and PEGS Football Club skipper Sean Towner all spoke on the need for anti-homophobia awareness as well as the impact that homophobic & discriminatory language plays in sport. Jeff Kennett, Sean and Dean Beck (presenter at JOY 94.9FM and MC for the day are pictured above.

VAFA President Michael Hazell was a guest on the day and told vafa.com.au.

“ It was great to see so many from community and elite sport turning up to support the Pride Cup. Community sport, including the VAFA, has such an important role to play in changing community attitudes to a whole host of issues.”

“Homophobia, including the use of causal homophobic language in our everyday conversation, is one such issue. The VAFA looks forward to working with our clubs and our community over coming months in spreading some of the key messages that came out of the day. Well done to everyone involved”.

The VAFA were proudly represented on the day by both Michael and Sean and are considering a similar event or campaign to help spread the message that anti-homophobic commentary regardless of where or when it occurs is never acceptable.
