Remembering Ian Redpath
The recent passing of Australian cricketing great Ian Redpath reminded us of Paul Amy’s recent story for News Corp about Ian’s passion for the VAFA. Redpath is best known as

Kew continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 123-point win over the Yarra Valley at Victoria Park. Kew in their specially crafted jumped for for the Freeze MND appeal were relentless in their pursuit for the minor premiership. The Bears opened up with nine first-quarter goals to nil, effectively having the game sewed up at quarter-time. Robert Maibaum and Andrew Brazzale were unstoppable for the Bears as they combined for 12 of their sides’ 24 goals. The Bushrangers will be disappointed with their first half resulting in only two behinds, but should find solace in being able to impact the scoreboard after the main break. The win keeps the Bears at the top of the ladder with a percentage of 199.46, while Bushrangers are dwindling at the bottom without a win to their name.
Old Geelong won their second game in a row with a 36-point away win against Old Mentonians at Turner Road Reserve. After a tight first quarter, the Ogs made their move in the second when they held the Panthers goalless and set up a 25-point buffer at the half. The second half was much the same with the Ogs keeping their opponents at an arm’s length the entire time and eventually running out six goal victors. Andrew Leahy and Mark Gledhill kicked four majors for their respective clubs, while Hugh McKay was best-on-ground for the Ogs. After starting the season 3-2, the Panthers are now reeling in seventh position following four losses in a row.
Ormond continue to stake their claim as the best side in Division One, smashing Whitefriars by 106 points at E. E. Gunn Reserve on their way to nine wins on the trot. The Friars never looked likely after conceding 12 first half goals and only kicking two of their own. The second half was much the same, with Monders Matthew Martinov and Isaiah Tahana combining for eight goals and continuing the first-class form they showcased in their last outing before the Queen’s birthday weekend. Ormond will be looking to continue their unbeaten run next week when they host fellow undefeated Division One side, Kew.
NOBS/St Pats registered their fifth win for the season with a hard-fought 15-point victory over Prahran Assumption at Toorak Park over the weekend. Leading for the whole match, NOBS couldn’t find a way to shake the Two Blues but managed to fight their way to victory thanks to a best-on-ground performance from Gerrard Bence, three Jeremy Nettlefold majors and accurate kicking in front of goal. The win leaves NOBS in fifth position on the ladder with five wins from their nine games, while the Two Blues are struggling in eighth spot with only two wins.
St Mary’s Salesian was able to stay a game clear in fourth position on the ladder with a 35-point win against Bulleen Templestowe at Ferndale Park. A seven goal to nil first quarter set up the win for the Saints, who refused to let up in the ensuing quarters on their way to victory. Louis Holmes did the bulk of the damage with four majors, while Kristian Cherbakof shone for the losing side on his way to five of his own goals.
