In light of ASADA’s recent drug testing of community football players, VAFA President Tim Nelson has sent all Clubs a letter reiterating the VAFA’s stance on drugs, as well as Anti-Doping messages from the AFL.
Read Tim’s letter here:
“Dear Club Presidents and Secretaries,
As you are most likely aware, last weekend members of the anti-doping body ASADA tested players from the Essendon District Football League B-grade match between Doutta Stars and Craigieburn.
ASADA said in a statement to Fairfax Media on Monday: “We can confirm the Australian Football League (Victoria) Limited contracted ASADA to conduct tests at this level.
ASADA implements an intelligence-based testing program, working with sports to target athletes and competitions at highest risk in an effort to deter and detect doping. It is important for athletes to understand that ASADA can conduct testing on any athlete who participates in a sport with an anti-doping policy. “Every athlete, regardless of the level of competition, has the right to compete in a sport free from doping.”
The VAFA totally endorses ASADA’s view on drugs and adopts the AFL Anti-Doping Code. Under the policy, ASADA could test VAFA players and if they do attend training or match day, players notified of their requirement for a doping test must comply with the request.
We would recommend you publicise this information and if necessary further educate your club in regards to these policies.
The VAFA Drugs policy can be found on our website under Club Admin / Policies and Facts sheets. It may also be opportune to familiarise yourselves with the wider VAFA policies.
We must continue to educate and remain vigilant in our endeavours to maintain our pre-eminent standards of competition.
Tim Nelson
President VAFA”
