Big V Weekend is here!
Representative football weekend is upon us, starting with Thursday’s Big V Gala Dinner, then Saturday’s two massive matches against PFL at VAFA HQ and finishing with Sunday’s matches at Bendigo.
UHS-VU bounced back from their first loss of 2017 with a 35-point victory over La Trobe University at La Trobe Sporting Grounds. Leading by just three points at the half time break, the Vultures seven goals to two for the remainder of the match. Brandon Jackson nailed five goals for the ladder leaders and Edward Behrens was best afield, while Matthew Ogle was most impressive for the Trobers for the second time in three matches.
Swinburne University made light work of South Melbourne Districts, running out 104-point winners at Lindsay Hassett Oval. Daniel Close dominated throughout the match and finished with five goals in a BOG performance for Swinburne, while Jordan Heis was once again the best for the Swans. The Razorbacks sit third on the ladder, seven spots above the winless Swans.
Westbourne Grammarians went one step closer to solidifying a finals berth when they defeated Albert Park by 33 points at Beaurepaire Pavilion. Dale Collins equalled his Round 1 season-high of five goals for the Warriors and Nicholas Schiano chipped in with four. Joshua Beets nailed five goals for the Falcons as they now fall two wins behind eighth place on the ladder with two games remaining.
Richmond Central caused the upset of Division 3 as they ran over Power House to the tune of 28 points at Ross Gregory Oval. The Snakes led at every break throughout the day as Jared Goldsack booted a season-high four goals. Club President and severely underrated utility, Josh Sharp, was best afield for the Snakes while Luke Stubbs starred for the second-placed House. It was just the House’s second loss for the season.
Canterbury made light of Point Cook in their Round 16 clash, defeating the Bulldogs by 35 points at Saltwater Reserve. Leading by eight points at half time, the Cobras finished with nine goals to three as Andrew Hummerston led the way with six goals. Mitchell Szabo kicked five for the Cobras, while Mason Kip fought valiantly for the Dogs.
