Bullants bite back, four remain undefeated in Division 1

Two rounds into the Division 1 season and Therry Penola reside atop of the ladder after they claimed their second win via a 51-point victory over Oakleigh at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. Leading by 22 points at half time, the Lions piled on another six goals to two in the final two terms. Jarrod Egglstone continued his outstanding form to start the year with two goals and a BOG display, while Corey Bannister, Darcy Ryan and John Humphrey each contributed two. Lucas Cloke played a lone hand up forward for the Krushers with four of their six majors, while they sit sixth on the ladder with one win and one loss to commence 2018.

Preston Bullants bounced back from their one-point loss to West Brunswick in Round 1 with a comprehensive 81-point victory over Brunswick NOBS at Gillon Oval. After an even first term where both sides struggled to impart any scoreboard pressure, the Bullants exploded with eight goals to one in the second. A further seven unanswered in the fourth iced the match for the Bullants, who had Connor Howard peppering the goals en route to a bag of five. Sean Calcedo also kicked four and was damaging across the ground. Nick Burgin kicked two and was best afield for Brunswick but they sit eighth on the ladder with two straight losses.

West Brunswick made it two from two as they came from behind to defeat Ivanhoe by 16 points at Ransford Oval. Trailing by 11 points at the main break, the Westies kicked four goals to one in a hard-fought second half, with Bill Irving top-scoring with two goals. Cormac Cashin was named best afield for the second week in a row, and Mitch Howie impressed in his first game for the season. Lachlan Roberts again led the way in front of goal for the Magpies with two, but they find themselves 10th on the ladder with a percentage of 43.27%.

Hampton Rovers’ resurgence continued as they defeated Prahran Assumption by 36 points at Toorak Park. Leading by nine points at the half, the Rovers kicked five unanswered goals in a dominant third term and held off the Two Blues for the remainder of the match. Josh Broadley starred for the Rovers and Josh McPherson bagged four goals. Tom Freeman and Will Brereton fought hard for the winless Two Blues. The Rovers are second to the Lions on the Division 1 ladder, while the Two Blues are seventh.

Ormond is the fourth undefeated side two rounds into the season after they accounted for rivals Kew by 40 points at Victoria Park. Leading by just seven points at half time, the Monders piled on seven goals to two in the second half. Blair Atkins claimed BOG honours after a standout performance for the Monders, while Matt Hine and Zev Aron each kicked three goals. Kyle Margaritis led the charge for the bears with two goals and an impressive display, but they now sit ninth after two tough losses.
