Fields claim first win, Kew continue hot form

Caulfield Grammarians v SKOB (4.2 26 – 1.8 14)

Caulfield Grammarians claimed their first victory for the season in a hard-fought contest against SKOB Saints at Glen Huntly Park. The Fields got off to a flyer and gained early momentum that stuck with them throughout the match in their 12-point win. Inaccuracy was SKOB’s biggest letdown, as a cohort only managing 1 goal and 8 behinds for the entirety of the game. Leah Oswald starred with 2 goals and 17 touches and was easily best afield. Other notable performances came from 2017 Big V star Irena Malliaras with 17 touches and a goal, Millie Klingbeil and Emily Harkin. SKOB’s Anna Townshend, Brigette Snell and Georgia Cropley were the best players in their side’s defeat. The Fields will be full of confidence going into Round 6 after a shaky start to the season whilst SKOB’s fluctuating form continues.

Old Trinity v Kew (1.4 10 – 6.3 39)

Kew continue to push for top spot on the ladder after a convincing 29-point victory against Old Trinity at Hudson Oval Playing Fields. Accurate goalkicking and dominant first and third quarters where they kicked five goals to nil were enough to seal the deal for the Bears. Old Trinity struggled to significantly impact the scoreboard and allowed the Bears to run away with it after matching them in the second and fourth quarters. Danielle Calautti continued her sensational first season of football with 21 touches and a goal, while other impressive performances came from Ash Bruce with 2 goals, Joelle Metres, Lauren Grant and Em O’Beirne. Old Trinity’s Imogen Barnett continued her dominance in the ruck with 28 hitouts and Grace Dillon was instrumental with 20 touches.

Fitzroy-ACU FC v Marcellin (5.4 34 – 4.10 34)

In a thrilling encounter at Ramsden St Oval, Marcellin drew with a courageous and impressive Fitzroy-ACU. Marcellin’s inaccuracy hurt them on the scoreboard, kicking 4 goals and 10 behinds, with 5 more scoring shots than Fitzroy in total. The Roys commanded the lead early, leaving Marcellin goalless in the first term. The Roys were ahead up until three quarter time, however Marcellin hunted them down in the fourth and kicked two late goals to equalise, retaining an undefeated status for the season thus far. Fitzroy’s Erin Gogerly this week amassed 24 disposals and a goal in a flawless performance, one of the most consistent players in the competition. Ruby McDermott made a big impact with a goal, 16 touches and 4 marks. Marcellin’s Taylor Padfield was incredible in the ruck, amassing 62 hitouts and a goal, while Nat Macdonald and Laura Robertson were both instrumental with 21 touches each.

Melbourne University v Old Xaverians (6.7 43 – 3.2 20)

Melbourne University triumphed over Old Xaverians at University Oval by a convincing 23-point margin. There were just three scoring shots in a hard-fought first term with Xavs kicking the only goal of the quarter. However, throughout the remainder of the clash, Melbourne Uni improved their ball use and kicked away with six of the last eight goals. A number of standout performances were significant components in the MUGARS’ victory, with Ruby Grounds simply unstoppable as she racked up 38 touches in a record disposal count from any player in William Buck Premier this season. Additionally, more big numbers were attained by MUGARS players; Candice Adams with 26 touches, Lisa Di Camillo with 22 and Marinella Salafia with 20. Old Xav’s’ Maddie Sorrenti had a breakthrough performance, racking up 27 touches, 5 marks and 4 tackles, and alongside her, Cassandra Pittard performed well with 17 disposals.
