On a fresh Saturday morning on 8 July 2017, both the Senior and the U19 Big V sides hosted AFL Vic Country at Frankston Oval. It was the U19s who kicked off the day, as they showcased elite talent and determination to come from 23 points down at the last break and fell agonisingly short by just four points against the Country.
A four-goal to one final term led by captain Tom Cameron (Old Melburnians) and Tate Short (SBMT) gave the U19’s their closest loss since last beating the Country in 2013. Vice-captain Alex Mastromanno was unstoppable when the ball entered the Big V’s forward 50, backing up his sensational start to the year at Old Brighton with five of the Big V’s nine majors. Christian Carnovale (Hampton Rovers) and Sam Michael (De La Salle) were outstanding throughout the entire game, while Short chipped in with two goals.
For AFL Vic Country, who just proved too good on the day, it was Downie, Blood, Mannagh, Turnbull (1), Kelly (2) and Carlon who were named best.
