Rovers, CYs triumph in one-point thrillers

Hampton Rovers and Mazenod played out one of two one-point classics in Premier C this weekend, with the Rovers claiming their second consecutive win. Trailing by 13 points at the first break, the Rovers kicked four goals to two in the second term before the Nodders once again gained the ascendancy in the third. Five goals to four in a thrilling final quarter sealed it for the Rovers and it was Josh Broadley who continued his outstanding form with a BOG performance. Ross Sklavenitis and Sam Bradford kicked two goals each for the Rovers while Bradley Kovac nailed three for the Nodders. The Nodders sit eighth on the ladder but with the sixth-best percentage due to their tight losses. The Rovers move into sixth.

Ajax pushed Williamstown CYMS the whole way as the CYs edged past for a one-point victory at Gary Smorgon Oval. The ladder leaders trailed by 20 points at half time but four unanswered goals in the third brought them back into the game and, with two goals apiece in the fourth, proved the difference. Dylan Jones and Samuel Callard starred for the CYs while Stuart Fayman was at his best with three of the Jackas’ eight goals.

Marcellin registered their third win of the season as they defeated PEGS by eight points at PEGS Sporting Fields. The Bombers brought the margin to under a goal late in the match but missed an opportunity and the Eagles capitalised with an end-to-end sealer. Adam Tomaro and Steven Fitzgerald kicked three goals each for the Eagles while Ben Wiggins was named in the best for the third consecutive match. Adrian Romanyk booted four goals for PEGS and took his season tally to 16 and Daniel Flaherty was their most impressive player.

Six goals to one in the final term helped Ormond to a nine-point come-from-behind victory over Old Camberwell at EE Gunn Reserve. Trailing at every break throughout the day and by as much as 21 at three quarter time, the Monders galvanised in an impressive and dominant final term. Henry Simon top-scored with three goals for the Monders while Robert Campbell kicked three and was sensational for the Wellers. Ormond sit in second spot on the ladder, five above the Wellers.

Old Ivanhoe inflicted Old Mentonians with their first loss of the season, running out 61-point winners at Keysborough Playing Fields. The Hoers opened with five goals to three in the first term and built upon their lead with 12 goals to four thereafter. Nick Reeves-Smyth starred in a BOG display while teammates Hamish Matheson, Jack Welham, Luke Velluto and Mal Mitris kicked three goals each. Bryce Damin was a standout for the Panthers and Alexander Cross kicked three of his own.
