2019 Premiers Old Scotch sent an early message to the competition, thumping Old Mentonians in their twilight fixture at Camberwell Sports Ground.
The Cardinals weren’t going to let anyone spoil their 2019 flag raising celebrations, jumping out to a five-goal lead at quarter time.
From there, it was one way traffic as Old Scotch continued to hit the scoreboard with regularity, whilst holding the Panthers goalless in the contest.
Emily Fraser-Smith and Alexandra Theodosi combined for eight of Old Scotch’s 16 goals, booting four apiece while Jordan Mifsud and Lily Goss were judged best afield, hitting the scoreboard with three goals each as well.
Samantha Kerr led the way for Old Mentonians.
Williamstown CYMS got off to the perfect start to life in Division 1 with a 12-point win over Old Haileybury.
Three first half goals saw the Cy’s enter half time with a 15-point lead, enough to keep the Hearts at bay in the second half in tough, wintery conditions at Princes Park.
Andrea Cameron debut for the Cy’s resulted in a best on ground performance, with Hannah Elliott and captain Shannon Egan also featured in the Cy’s best players.
Carly Dillon was best on ground for Old Haileybury with Serene Vudinabola putting in a great effort along with a goal.
And not to be outdone by their grand final counterparts from 2019, Old Brighton staked their own claim for early season flag favouritism, defeating Therry Penola by 71 points.
A six-goal second half capped off the Tonners empathic victory, as the Lions failed to hit the scoreboard in their Division 1 debut.
Old Brighton was led by Ava Hales and Lucy Grant, who combined for five goals in best on ground performances, while Therry Penola recruit Kylie deBruyn was judged best afield in her debut for the Lions.
