New ladder leaders in Div 1 Women’s

By VAFA Media · April 28, 2021
New ladder leaders in Div 1 Women’s

Zac Jennings

We have new ladder leaders as the two unbeaten teams of Division 1 further stake their claims as being the favourites in 2021.

Old Scotch handed Williamstown CYMS its first loss of the season with a commanding 61-point victory at Lofts Reserve. The visitors were able to hold the hosts scoreless in the first half, before a seven goal to two second half saw the result blowout beyond any doubt for the Cardinals and see them take top spot on the ladder. Mia Cowan was instrumental for Old Scotch, with Jordan Mifsud and Alexandra Theodosi continuing their early season form and kicking two goals apiece. Hannah Elliot was the standout for Williamstown, booting two in a best on ground performance, and was supported by CY’S captain Shannon Egan.

Old Scotch will look to remain unbeaten in 2019 when they head to John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve to take on the Therry Penola, while Williamstown will host Old Mentonians in round four.

A nine goal to one second half has seen Old Brighton keep pace with the ladder leads, after defeating Old Mentonians 16.12.108 to 5.1.31. After a keenly contested first half, the Tonners flexed their muscle in the second half to run away 77-point victors. Lucy Grant (6) and Cat O’Brien (5) booted 11 of Old Brighton’s 16 goals, while the ever-reliable India Tait was judged best afield. Monique Maitland’s best on ground performance for the Panthers included two goals, while Madeline De Amicis and Lotus Jeffs also featured prominently.

Old Brighton will host Old Haileybury in round four, while Old Mentonians will travel to Lofts Reserve in a clash with Williamstown.

Old Haileybury notched their second win of the season with a comfortable victory over Therry Penola. Holding a three-point lead at the main break, the Hearts were able to restrict their opponents to only one behind in the second half, winding up 19-point victors at the final siren. Carly Dillon was again one of Haileybury’s best performers, continuing her early season form, as was Kathryn Spencer and Lauren Oliver. Bethany Rees starred for Therry Penola and whilst also hitting the scoreboard, with Natarsha Kemp and Lucy McLaren keeping up their impressive starts to the season for the Lions.

Old Haileybury will go on the road in round four to face the in-form Old Brighton, with Therry Penola playing host to the other in-form team of Division 1, Old Scotch.
