PEGS snap losing streak, Two Blues topple Wellers

Prahran Assumption handed Old Camberwell their first loss of the season as they ran out 16-point winners at Toorak Park. Leading by 11 points after a tight opening half, the Two Blues got going in the third with five goals to two. The Wellers had nine more shots (8.22 to 13.8) but will rue missed opportunities and wayward kicking. Callum Wilson returned to his best in front of goal with majors for Prahran, while Rory Brodie continued his outstanding best and fairest type form. Caine Hillier was the main contributor with four goals for the Wellers, as they remain on top of the ladder at 6-1.

After losing their first four games of the year, St Mary’s Salesian pieced together their third consecutive victory as they defeated Oakleigh AFC by 27 points at Ferndale Park. The Saints led from the get-go with a four-goal opening term and kept applying scoreboard pressure with 4, 3 and 3 during the final three terms. Tom McDermott kicked his second bag of five in three weeks for the Saints, while Max Holmes was named best afield. Jett Murphy and Harry Boontjes impressed from an Oakleigh perspective. The Krushers have now lost three of their past four games.

Following their Round 1 loss to Kew, Whitefriars have now won six on the trot after disposing of Old Peninsula by 107 points on the weekend. The Friars piled on six goals to one in a dominant opening term and managed another 18 to six thereafter. It was a goal kicking bonanza from Daniel Wood (6), Michael Nitas (6) and Kristan Height (5) as they combined for 17 of their side’s 24 goals, while Daniel Massarotti outshone them all with BOG honours. Brett Macaulay (2) and James Bravo (2) were the only multiple goal kickers for the Pirates.

PEGS snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday, outlasting Brunswick 67-52 at Gillon Oval. The Bombers led by seven points at quarter time and maintained an arm’s length in an otherwise low-scoring affair throughout the afternoon. Despite kicking just nine goals, Riley Simmons (4) and Jordan Erougian (4) combined for eight of them, with the latter also named best afield. Chris Gavaghan and Matthew Palmer were standouts for NOBS in what was their third loss by 15 points or less.

Kew proved too strong for an inaccurate Therry Penola at Victoria Park, running out 46-point winners despite hitting the scoreboard just once more than the Lions. Five unanswered goals in the first quarter paved the way for the Bears, who finished the game with 14.11 (95) to the Lions’ 5.19 (49). Michael Henderson was named BOG for the Bears alongside Ned Waters who kicked five goals. Darcy Ryan and Kane O’Halloran slotted two each for the Lions.
