The weekend just gone saw wild and wintery weather conditions, raising the question – who are the best wet weather footy sides in Division 1?
The round began with Old Geelong taking on Old Brighton at home. The slippery conditions combined with the defensive pressure from both sides made it hard for anyone to score, with neither team managing a goal for the first three quarters of play.
However, Old Brighton came out firing in the final term, kicking four goals to zero, and were able to extend their undefeated winning streak.
Kathleen Dunn and Juliet Grant continued their excellent form, appearing in the best for Old Geelong for the fourth time this season, while Sienna Courtney, Annie Grant and Jasmine Tait impressed the Old Brighton coaches in their victory.
The next match of the round saw the Hampton Rovers get their first win of the season against Marcellin OC.
The Rovers started strong, kicking two goals in the first quarter, which set them up nicely for the remainder of the game, until they were able to add another two goals in the final term.
While Marcellin had their fair share of the ball, they were unable to capitalise on their efforts, only kicking 6 behinds for the day.
Lauren Morecroft was the only multiple goal scorer for the day, managing to kick two while Maisy Evans and Tania Carpinteri were named as the bests for their respective sides.
In the highly anticipated match up between Old Haileybury and Beaumaris, Beaumaris were once again able to show everyone that they should be a hot favourite for the flag.
With Beaumaris recording fourteen scoring shots to Old Haileybury’s four, it could have been a lot worse for the home side, who only trailed by 15 points at the final siren.
Bridget Hanrahan and Taylah Vines-Chapple both tried their hardest to get Old Haileybury over the line, kicking a goal each and being recognised as the best.
For the winning side, Caley Ryan, Sienna Tedde and Samantha Baisas all demonstrated why they were recently named in the Team of the Decade for Beaumaris.
The next match of the round saw the freshly regraded Old Xaverians take on 2022 Grand Finalists, Old Camberwell Grammarians, in a spicy battle.
It was close all day, with Old Camberwell leading by just four points at three quarter time. Old Xaverians were able to kick two straight goals in the final quarter, resulting in the first draw of Division 1 Womens’ this year.
The draw should fill Old Xaverians with the confidence that they are now at home in a division where they can compete with the best, while Old Camberwell will rue their inaccuracy in front of goals, ending the game 4.10 to Old Xaverians’ 5.4.
The final match of the round saw Hawthorn AFC host Old Melburnians for their special Wings match. Unfortunately for Hawthorn, Old Melburnians were too strong, defeating the Hawks by a convincing 62 points.
Kayla May Smith was impressive for the Hawks in her first game this year, while Georgia Dunlop was best on for Old Melburnians. Sophie Fraser also put in a solid performance, slotting four goals.
Winning their first game in Division 1 after moving up from Division 2, Old Melburnians will be proud of their performance and excited to see how far they can go in this division.
