The Victorian Amateur Football Association is saddened by the passing of legendary Old Paradians coach, Maurie Considine.
Regarded as one of the absolute legends of the Club, he joined Old Paradians in 1949 as a 17 year old, playing competitive footy for the first time. Two years later he opened his premiership account, as a full-back in our 1951 side, which was the Club’s first premiership.
One year later, Maurie was recruited by the Hawthorn Football Club, where he played 37 games between 1952 and 1956. After hanging up the boots, he went on to coach four senior VAFA premierships (three in A Grade) across eight seasons, through until 1966 when he was asked back to the Hawks as an assistant coach, a role he held until 1971.
He returned to Parade in official capacity in 1985 as President, when just 12 months later he oversaw a treble of Premierships in the Under 19s, Reserves and Seniors. He was named as coach in the Old Paradians Team Of The Century.
The VAFA Board has recently confirmed that the Premier B Reserve Men’s Best on Ground Medal will be renamed The Considine Family Medal as recognition of the family’s outstanding long-term service to the club and the Association.
The VAFA sends our condolences to the Considine family.
