St Kevin’s connection with the Top End has continued this off-season with a large group of Saints players travelling to the Northern Territory playing in the NTFL.
The women played two matches of football with the Wanderers and Darwin Buffaloes, with the first game played in oppressive heat and the second game played in torrential rain. The club reported it was a memorable experience for all players involved with high quality football and so many great friendships made.
SKOB Saints head coach Tommy Purcell said a highlight of the trip was the day spent at Barunga, a small Aboriginal community about 80 km south east of Katherine with a population of around 350. The girls were invited to share in bush tucker (kangaroo tail) and learn about culture on country.
The football match with the Arnhem Crows Football Club was a magical cultural experience that brought everyone together. The Saints are looking forward to members of the Barunga community coming down to Melbourne and playing at the club during Indigenous Round this year.
The SKOB Saints look forward to continuing to grow the relationship with the Wanderers, Darwin Buffaloes and the Barunga community for many years to come.
Well done to the 14 girls who represented the St Kevin’s Old Boys Football Club so proudly. The impact they made was enormous and the experience is one they will cherish for a lifetime.
