Round 9 of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition saw some competitive matchups, with all teams coming back refreshed after the Bye round. Each team brought their A-game, resulting in standout performances and memorable moments, especially by Westbourne, who only went down to the undefeated Williamstown CYMS by two goals, showcasing their promise for the second half of the season.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers delivered a commanding performance over Aquinas, securing a convincing 9.13 (67) to 1.2 (8) victory. From the outset, they established their dominance, displaying exceptional skill and teamwork that left Aquinas struggling to keep pace.
St Bedes forward line was particularly impressive in the first quarter, capitalising on every opportunity with precision and kicking four goals. Their relentless pressure and ability to convert turnovers into scoring opportunities were key factors in their comprehensive win. The captain duo of Madeline Pearson and Maddi Wilson were particularly threatening in offence, kicking two goals apiece.
Aquinas showed resilience and determination throughout the match. Their defensive unit worked tirelessly under immense pressure, with standout efforts from Emily Box, Meg Dargan, and Madison Mauchline. They managed to keep St Bedes goalless in the third quarter. However, the discrepancy in execution and finishing between the two sides was evident, with St Bedes/Mentone Tigers running away with it in the end.
Fitzroy continued their impressive run with a dominant 10.8 (68) to 2.3 (15) victory over Old Xaverians. Their well-structured game plan and cohesive team play were on full display, leaving Old Xaverians struggling to find answers.
From the first bounce, Fitzroy’s midfield took control, with their ability to win clearances and drive the ball forward being instrumental in setting up numerous scoring opportunities.
Georgia Bennett and Esther Boles were deadly in front of the sticks, finishing with two goals each. Steph Pitt, Tess Young, and Elyse Campbell were the stars of the day, earning their spot in Fitzroy’s best three on ground.
Old Xaverians showed glimpses of their potential, particularly through the efforts of Chiara Chiarelli, Jess Slupecki, and Mel Clarke. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to match the intensity and efficiency of Fitzroy.
Old Geelong secured a hard-fought 7.5 (47) to 3.3 (21) win over Beaumaris in a match that highlighted their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. The contest was fiercely competitive, with both teams displaying moments of brilliance.
Old Geelong’s victory was built on the back of their disciplined defensive efforts and efficient ball movement. Goalkicking star Matilda Arthur proved why she is the hot favourite for this year’s leading goal scorer, kicking five snags and being named in the top three players for the match.
Despite the loss, Beaumaris showcased their fighting spirit and skill, especially in the final quarter where they kept Old Geelong to one behind. Cassandra Newman, Sienna Tedde, and Georgia Tysoe were named amongst the best for their impressive displays of effort throughout the match.
In the closest match of the round, Williamstown CYMS edged out Westbourne Grammarians 4.1 (25) to 2.5 (17) in a thrilling contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Both teams were evenly matched, with the game characterised by intense pressure and physicality.
This low-scoring affair saw a compelling first half, with a goalless first quarter and two goals apiece for the second quarter, bringing the score 14-12 in favour of Westbourne.
However, it was Williamstown’s ability to capitalise on crucial moments in the second half that proved to be the difference. Goal kickers Temeika Cathery and Jasmine Farrugia made the most of their limited opportunities, while their defence stood firm against Westbourne’s persistent attacks and kept them goalless for the second half.
Westbourne fought valiantly, with standout performances from Jasmine Farrugia, Kiara Henry, and Manaia Huta who worked tirelessly to drive their team forward. Their efforts kept Westbourne within striking distance throughout the match, but Williamstown’s composure in the final quarter secured the win.
This close contest will put Westbourne on the radar for the rest of the teams as a side not to be taken lightly as they find their momentum in the second half of the season to keep their finals aspirations alive.
As the competition progresses, the intensity and stakes continue to rise. Round 9 provided a glimpse into the thrilling action and high level of competition that defines the VAFA Prem B Women’s season. With each team striving for excellence, the journey towards the finals promises to be an exciting and unpredictable ride.
