Flag Feature: The Saints came marching in (Part 1)
When the St Mary’s and Salesian Old Collegians football clubs merged in 2008, the hope was that the power of the combined entity would deliver sustained on-field success. However, the
St Mary’s Salesian AFC has proudly presented their Tackle Your Feelings (TYF)-themed jumper as a token of appreciation, with the full support of the VAFA.
This initiative underscores the club’s commitment to prioritising player wellbeing and fostering a positive culture within their teams.
Throughout the 2024 season, St Mary’s Salesian embraced the importance of mental health, integrating the TYF program to reinforce the club’s values. Club President Penny Heath commended the initiative, noting its transformative impact on the U19s and Women’s teams. She described the sessions as highly valuable, with leadership group and players providing positive feedback.
At the presentation, U19s Coach Matt Higgins reflected on the program’s benefits, sharing how it sparked meaningful conversations among players. He expressed surprise at the openness in the room and the personal stories that emerged, emphasising how the session had significantly strengthened the the team culture. Matt is a strong advocate for continuing the program in 2025 and confident in its positive influence on both the players and the wider club environment.

The VAFA remains committed in its partnership with Tackle Your Feelings, which is a key partner that aligns with the association’s Mental Health & Welfare strategy. TYF not only strengthens mental health awareness but has also inspired the VAFA’s Player Assistance Program, offering additional support for players.
In 2024, the VAFA facilitated 24 TYF sessions, reaching 900 players and coaches across the community. Feedback from participating clubs has been positive, with many noting how the program has helped build stronger team cultures throughout the club.
St Mary’s Salesian’s TYF-themed jumper symbolizes their dedication towards mental health and serves as an inspiration to others in the VAFA community. The VAFA is proud to announce its continued partnership with Tackle Your Feelings in 2025, aiming to bring the program to even more clubs.
