April Winner Announcement – Carruthers Executive Community Coach & The Pass Volunteer of the Month
Recognition awards in 2025 are back! The VAFA is proud to celebrate the outstanding contributions of volunteers and coaches who go above and beyond to support their clubs and embody the values of our community. Each month, we receive nominations that highlight inspiring stories of dedication, leadership, and impact — and April was no exception.
The Pass Volunteer of the Month – Chris Swinburne (St John’s)
Congratulations to Chris Swinburne from St John’s OC FC, named April’s The Pass Volunteer of the Month. Nominated by Elise Scott, a committee member at the club, Chris has been a committed volunteer for over 17 years, contributing to a variety of roles. Her long-standing service is a testament to her passion and the VAFA value of Community.
“Chris is the hardest working volunteer at St John’s! She has been there for many years through the ups and downs of it all. When the club almost folded a few years ago she worked so hard to keep it going. She’s there every Thursday night doing meals etc as well. As well as getting there before anyone else on a Saturday setting everything up!”
Carruthers Executive Community Coach of the Month – Bernard Pretty (MHSOB FC)
Congratulations to Bernard Pretty from Melbourne High School Old Boys FC, awarded Carruthers Executive Community Coach of the Month. Bernard has been involved in footy coaching for several years and has spent over a decade at his current club, where he has served as the reserves coach, senior assistant, and now holds the position of senior coach.
Bernard was nominated by club volunteer Kevin Pious for his outstanding dedication and embodiment of the VAFA’s Community value.
“Bernard Pretty lives and breathes Community, making him an irreplaceable part of Melbourne High School Old Boys Football Club. As Senior Coach, Bernie’s leadership extends far beyond the field — he actively champions inclusion, support, and unity across all levels of the club, embodying the VAFA values of Community, Respect, Integrity, and Inclusiveness.
Since taking the helm in 2020, Bernie has been instrumental in prioritising the U19’s program, understanding that a strong junior pathway is essential for long-term club success. His genuine and welcoming nature — regardless of a player’s skill level or background — has been a defining trait, ensuring that every member feels valued and included.
Bernie’s commitment is evident every week: first to arrive, last to leave, always checking in on injured players, recognising personal milestones, and personally welcoming new players and volunteers. On game days, Bernie is the club’s heartbeat — offering support to players, staff, and fellow coaches, constantly mentoring others to help them grow and succeed.
His selfless actions have built a club culture that thrives on belonging and mutual support, not just winning. Bernie’s impact has made MHSOBFC a true home for the South Yarra community, setting a shining example of what it means to lead with heart.
Bernie started playing as a 15-year-old back in the days when we had Junior teams and he has been at the club ever since. It is leaders like Bernard Pretty who keep the spirit of community football alive — and it is an honour to have him at the forefront of our club.”
We commend both Chris and Bernard for their continued contribution to their clubs and the wider VAFA community.
