Week 7 Weekend Wrap
Here’s a look at some of the Round 7 social media highlights across VAFA grounds in our weekend wrap. The KommunityTV double-header was between SKOB and Old Haileybury, where the
Old Carey recorded a dominant away win at Beaumaris Secondary College to claim top spot from De La Salle, who suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Hawthorn who delivered the upset of the round.
Old Carey was commanding as they stormed to a 27-point victory against MCC. Leading at every break, Old Carey never looked like they were going to lose, with inform forward Amy McCormack booting four goals.
Fantastic performances from Kellie McLeod and Lisa Walshe also helped steer Old Carey to a great win away from home. Meanwhile, Nikita Rogers starred as the leading goal scorer for MCC for the morning and was aptly named best afield.
The Panthers have been prominent scorers so far this season, often recording more than 40 points in the majority of their games. Their only loss so far this season came against ladder-rivals De La Salle in Round 2. They will be looking to turn the tables on them next week, as they travel to Waverley Oval to face them.
It was a scrappy affair, says La Trobe University coach Samantha Greene, after her team narrowly held on to beat Aquinas. With La Trobe kicking all their goals in the first term, they did well to hang in there and grind out a win.
Greene was happy with her side’s efforts, considering they were depleted and only had one player on the bench after halftime. “It was a great test of our depth, a good chance for players to step up and also explore a few magnets changes we hadn’t tried,” Greene said.
Molly Licciardi kicked a goal for Aquinas late on in the third term to keep them within touching distance, but it just wasn’t to be for Aquinas in the end, who couldn’t quite get there. Natasha Derksen and Asher De Klijn impressed in a tough contest for the Bloods.
Handy result overall for La Trobe, who now head into a double bye, keen to gear themselves up for the next part of the season.
UHS-VU rallied in the second half to record a thirty-nine-point win over Box Hill North at Brens Oval. Coach Alex Henry felt as if his side were the better team in the first half but were just unable to put the goals on the board due to a great display of defence from Box Hill North.
However, the game opened up for them in the second half, booting six goals and grinding their opposition into the ground. “I was particularly impressed with our stoppage work, where we were dominant the whole day”, said Henry.
Emma Boeck and Holli Brindle combined for four goals, with fellow teammates Hannah Greaves and Phoebe Skeels also booting a goal each. Having not dropped a game since Round 1, Box Hill North was searching for five wins on the bounce. They will be looking to return to the winner’s circle in two weeks’ time, as they miss action in Round 8 with a bye.
Hawthorn took a major scalp at home, beating undefeated De La Salle by seven points. Inaccurate goal kicking severely hampered De La Salle, with three-goals-ten not enough to ascend any form of scoreboard pressure.
Credit to Hawthorn, who were able to capitalise on their chances and break De La’s undefeated streak. Rachel Tan kicked two goals for the Hawks and put in an inspirational performance. After coming into the division three weeks ago following the regrading period, Hawthorn is finding their stride and starting to put together a handy record, winning two of their first three games in their new competition.
De La Salle definitely loses no admirers following another gallant performance. They will rest and regroup, preparing for a first vs second clash against Old Carey next weekend.
Parkside was able to get back on the winners list as they downed Brunswick by 42 points. Martina Zeevaarder was instrumental for the home side, kicking four goals and setting her side up for a stunning victory.
Parkside definitely reaped the benefits of Zeevaarder’s performance, kicking their biggest score of the season. Scoring has certainly not been a problem for the Devils this season, often notching up large totals and having multiple goal kickers.
It was a win Parkside needed in the end, with the Devils still sitting two games off the top four.
Round 8 shapes up to be another outstanding round of footy, with a top-of-the-table clash upon us between De La Salle and Old Carey. Inform Hawthorn also takes on big winners Parkside in a twilight matchup that is shaping up to be exciting football. Elsewhere, UHS-VU are taking on Coburg at home, while Aquinas come up against MCC at JW Manson Reserve. Box Hill North sit this one out with the BYE.
