In the competitive landscape of local football, the Whitefriars Football Club Under 19’s team stands as a testament to commitment and camaraderie, as they navigate the challenge of remaining winless so far this season.
What started as ten mates wanting to stay connected through football quickly became a spirited young group hailing from a range of different sporting backgrounds. All united by a shared passion for Australian Rules Football and a desire to grow together.
Player James Palumbo states at the beginning of the season, “Half of the team had never kicked a footy properly before so it’s been challenging but really rewarding to see how well we’ve developed.”
Under the dedicated leadership of Head Coach Nick Hee and assistants Eliot Ciardulli and Jeremy Freeman, the Under 19’s have quickly established a strong team culture.
Despite the scoreboard not yet reflecting their efforts, the commitment shown by the players is undeniable and the players are all in. Thursday night training sessions are consistent with large numbers in attendance, eager to learn, improve, and support one another.
Midfielder Oscar Bor noting, “You would think that the vibe struggles with the way we are losing, but we’re rocking up. We’re passionate. We know that it will come, it’s just a matter of when not if”.
The groups eagerness to learn has not only improved their ability to play as a group on the field but is significantly contributing to the culture off the field. The energy in which the young group of men are providing to the club is contagious and filters through the clubrooms and at social events.
Coach Nick Hee stating, “We’re really lucky to have such a terrific group of young men at our club, I’m excited for what they are building here.”
While wins are the ultimate goal in any sporting endeavour, the Whitefriars Under 19s are demonstrating that success can also be measured in commitment, growth, and the formation of strong bonds.
Their resilience in the face of early challenges, coupled with their enthusiastic participation at training, speaks volumes about their character and the positive environment fostered by all involved.
As the season progresses, it will be exciting to watch this promising group continue to develop and perhaps, turn their commitment into tangible results on the field.
