The VAFA is sad to announce the passing of Life Member John Robinson, who passed away in Dandenong on the 18th of August 2025.
John was a renowned gentlemen who served the VAFA in many capacities for over 20 years, including VAFA Match Day Manager, Timekeeper for VAFA finals, Representative Football Property Steward and Timekeeper, and VAFA Goal Umpire.
His contribution was recognised with a VAFA Certificate of Merit in 2020 and Life Membership of the VAFA in 2022.
The VAFA General Manager of the time Michael Sholly remembered John fondly.
“I had the pleasure of dealing with John Robinson through his involvement in the VAFA and also as a valued member of the MCC XXIX club.
“Not only was a he a goal umpire in the VAFA for many years but he worked in the office on match days with Nancy McTaggart having the inevitable task of collating all the days scores and sending them to AAP so they could be published in the Sunday papers. A difficult task of dealing with the 36 home teams, many of whom lost that day. John was an important component in administering the VAFA.
“John was also a volunteer cricket umpire and I was fortunate to be able to tour Japan with him and his wife Dot.
“RIP John Robinson a true VAFA legend.”
John’s fellow umpire and life member Brian “Benny” Goodman offered his tribute.
“It is with a heavy heart and sadness that we acknowledge the passing of John “Robbo” Robinson.
“Robbo loved the VAFA and was one of those real gems that would do whatever he could to help and assist others.
“For over 20 years Robbo served many roles as a VAFA Goal Umpire, VAFAUA secretary, Grounds Manager during Finals, and he managed the VAFA Rep Matches apparel and would venture down to Elsternwick Park to sort out all the gear and have it ready for the players mid week and would rarely make an error but he always had spares on hand.
“Robbo was also the official VAFA Rep timekeeper and he loved being involved and he earned the respect of everyone he came in contact with.
“Robbo was a good person and a loyal friend and as we mourn his passing we offer our sincerest condolences to his family at this time.
“Rest in Peace Robbo”
