MCC hold tight in close clash against Rovers

MCC hold tight in close clash against Rovers

Reporter Oscar Ludtke reviews Round 2 of Division 2 Women’s.

Richmond 10.13.73 def Caulfield 1.1.1

Richmond Centrals came up against Caufield Grammarians in Round 2 after coming off a win last week, their experience continuing to shine as they kicked three unanswered goals in the first quarter.

Richmond Centrals coach Bronte Ryan said: “I felt that our forwards and mids linked up really well for all four quarters. Our backline did well to repel any of their attack and that really showed on the scoreboard.”

It was standout performances from Erin Eldon and Mia Torquato for Richmond as they put on a show in the forward line, leading Richmond Centrals to victory in a big win at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.

Richmond made it difficult for Caufield to score all game, however Caufield’s backline stood out all day led by Kate Taylor and Jas Conrad. Caufield Grammarians coach Lach Worthy said “Richmond were too strong and well-structured across all lines”.

“We will continue to work hard on execution and numbers at the contest as we head into next week,” he said.

Beaumaris 10.12.72 def Old Yarra Cobras 0.1.1

It was a statement from Beaumaris at Doncaster Reserve as they took on Old Yarra in Round 2, with Beaumaris putting on a huge display straight out of the gates. Debutants Annabelle Harpley and Saffron Worsley both kicked two majors for the second week in a row.

Beaumaris’s quick ball movement from the midfield was a standout as they lead 49-1 going into the third term. They then continued to pile on the goals through Pippi Barrow who kicked two for the quarter.

Old Yarra were able to hold Beaumaris goalless in the last quarter.

“The fight and determination shown right through to the final siren was a standout, particularly in the last quarter where a collective defensive mindset across the ground resulted in keeping Beaumaris goalless,” Old Yarra coach Bree Pascoe said.

Beaumaris came away 71-point victors, and it was Geoge Kappa’s first win as senior coach, as they look ahead to take on Caufield in next week.

UHS-VU 3.5.23 def Old Camberwell 1.1.7

UHS-VU secured their second win of the season as they came up against Old Camberwell, with midfielder Abbey Mills leading the charge in the 16-point win.

“I was really pleased with the way the girls fought out the game against a high-quality opponent,” Old Camberwell coach Nick Hooper said.

“We have work to do to increase our scoring opportunities, but our defence was wonderful under a great deal of pressure.”

UHS-VU’s backline was also a talking point with a great performance from Jacqui Montgomery as she held the defence together and kept Old Camberwell goalless until the third term, as UHS-VU came away with the win.

MCC 4.9.33 def Hampton Rovers 4.4.28

It was an afternoon game down at Castlefield Reserve which saw Hampton Rovers come up against MCC. With both teams coming off wins, it was set to be a highly interesting contest in the contest from the get-go.

MCC trailed for majority of the game as Hampton applied the pressure, however a late comeback saw MCC come out on top in the dying minutes. “We were challenged by a very strong Hampton Rovers side this round and I’m very proud of the players for persevering with their efforts for all four quarters to get the nail-biting win,” MCC coach Sebastian Mueller said.

“Trailing for most of the game meant we had to try a few things to change the momentum of the game, so to get the go-ahead (winning) goal with only minutes left in the last quarter was a great feeling and gives us massive belief that we’re able to compete with more experienced teams this season.”

Hamptons attack was solid all game with two goals to Lily Boersma and another two coming from Amelia Everton-Wilson and vice-captain Maegan Miller.

MCC’s players really stood up with Jade Nisbet setting up a lot of plays for MCC as she led with her physicality, alongside Chenayde Reid up forward, while Belle Lewis-Toakley and Laura Suckling played “superb” down back.

With their second win of the season, MCC are in red-hot form going into Round 3 where they will face undefeated Richmond Centrals in what is set to be a tight match.
