Old Brighton breakthrough shakes ladder as Old Scotch and Old Geelong build momentum

Round 3 of the William Buck Premier Women’s competition delivered a mix of statement wins, a major upset and further signs that the race for finals spots in 2026 will be as tight as ever. While the top-end sides continued to flex their strength, Old Brighton’s breakthrough victory and Old Geelong’s growing momentum were among the standout storylines.

Old Geelong produced their most complete performance of the season, defeating Williamstown CYMS 11.15 (81) to 3.0 (18). The game showcased Old Geelong’s improving connection and ball movement, with Genevieve Ednie, Sarah Hanmer and Grace Mitchell all finishing with three goals apiece in a dominant attacking display. Coach Jack Crameri noted his side is “starting to gel” and highlighted their ability to execute their game plan more effectively. With key ruck options unavailable, Gemma Flanders stepped up impressively, alongside Aisling Tupper and Juliet Grant. For Williamstown, Loren Mills provided a bright spot with two goals, while Chloe Perrett and Alexandra Woodhead battled hard all day.

St Kevin’s edged out Westbourne Grammarians in a thriller, 3.4 (22) to 3.2 (20), with both sides showcasing strong defensive structures. Elyce Hay and Bree Doyle were instrumental in the narrow win, while Lydia Waghorne’s two goals kept Westbourne in the contest throughout. Gracie Lamers and Sarah Dickie again led from the front for the Grammarians, who continue to show resilience despite an 0-3 start.

Old Scotch reinforced their premiership credentials with a commanding 11.11 (77) to 3.2 (20) win over Kew. Despite managing injuries and ongoing changes to their line-up, the Cardinals delivered one of the performances of the round, dominating territory with over 20 scoring shots. Eloise Defina led the way with four goals, supported by Mia Cowan and Jordan Mifsud, who each added two. Coach Dean Anderson praised his side’s focus and resilience, while highlighting the continued impact of experienced leaders and emerging youth. Maxine Wells, Ella Crump and Mifsud were among the best in a well-rounded team display.

Kew, now 2-1, showed plenty of fight against one of the competition benchmarks. Coach Mannie Di Parsia emphasised the group’s effort and connection, noting the gap came down to “polish in big moments” rather than intent or work rate. Lauralee Rinaldi, Amelia Dawborn and Katie Dorsett were strong contributors in a challenging contest.

Caulfield Grammarians continued their strong response to a Round 1 loss with a hard-fought 5.11 (41) to 2.6 (18) victory over West Brunswick. In a high-pressure game, Caulfield controlled territory and generated repeated forward entries, though inaccuracy kept the margin within reach. Ruby Dale and Sarah Kenny each kicked two goals, while Olivia Rundle, Caitlin Linehan and Jade Hillas were influential across the ground. Coach Danielle Di Stefano was pleased with her side’s ability to lock the ball in their forward half and maintain pressure, while noting transition from turnover as a key area for improvement.

West Brunswick showed clear improvement, with coach Ryan Wandel praising the side’s four-quarter effort and smarter ball movement. Taylah Watson was outstanding, while debutants Caitlin O’Brien and Charlotte Gervasoni made immediate impacts. Despite the loss, the signs are positive for a team steadily building cohesion.

The upset of the round came as Old Brighton secured their first win of the season, defeating previously unbeaten Fitzroy 6.3 (39) to 4.6 (30). Old Brighton’s defensive discipline and structured ball movement proved decisive, with Caterina O’Brien and Cleo Phillips each kicking two goals. Georgia Zuchowski and Jasmine Tait were among the best in a well-rounded team performance. Coach Pat Malone highlighted the group’s improving chemistry, noting that with 16 debutants across the opening rounds, cohesion is beginning to build. The win provides a significant confidence boost and reinforces their belief at Premier level.

Fitzroy, now 2-1, were unable to maintain their early-season momentum despite strong efforts from Isobel Hartog and Madeleine De Bondt. The loss opens up the top of the ladder and adds further intrigue to the competition heading into Round 4.

Ladder Snapshot

After three rounds, Fitzroy remains on top despite their first loss, with Old Scotch and Old Geelong close behind as the only other sides with two wins. Caulfield continues to climb after back-to-back victories, while Kew, St Kevin’s and West Brunswick sit mid-table. Old Brighton’s breakthrough win lifts them off the bottom, leaving Westbourne and Williamstown CYMS still searching for their first victory.

Looking Ahead – Round 4

Round 4 presents several key matchups, headlined by Old Scotch hosting Old Geelong in a clash that could shape the early premiership race. Caulfield face a crucial test against Kew, while Fitzroy will look to respond against West Brunswick. St Kevin’s take on Williamstown CYMS, and Old Brighton will aim to build momentum when they meet Westbourne Grammarians.
