Old Scotch remain unbeaten as Caulfield make statement in Round 5

Round 5 of the William Buck Premier Women’s competition delivered another strong indication of the growing depth across the league, with Old Scotch and Caulfield Grammarians continuing to set the pace, while Fitzroy and Kew secured important wins heading into Round 6.

Kew produced a disciplined defensive performance to defeat Westbourne Grammarians 4.9 (33) to 0.5 (5) in a tough, contested clash. Kew shared the goals around through individual majors to Rachel Toose, Lara Stevens, Gemma Smith and Amelia Dawborn, while Sarah Dickie and Jazmine Holdsworth battled strongly for Westbourne.

Kew coach Mannie Di Parsia praised the way his side embraced the physical nature of the game and remained connected throughout.

“Our handball game in the first half was a real strength and showed exactly what we can do when we move the ball with confidence, composure and support around the contest,” Di Parsia said.

Kew’s pressure and defensive buy-in were central to the result, preventing Westbourne from ever fully settling into the game. Rachel Toose was influential throughout to claim the Danny Delbridge Medal.

For Westbourne, coach Chris Grant was encouraged by the effort shown by his young group despite difficult circumstances. After losing Isabelle Choate to injury and finishing the match without rotations, Grant praised the resilience of the side, particularly after half time.

Rosie Smith continued her impressive transition from soccer in her fifth game of league football, while Sarah Dickie, Caitlyn Gashi and Jazmine Holdsworth all played important roles. Grant reiterated that the club is embracing the challenge of Premier Women’s football as a major development opportunity.

Old Scotch remained unbeaten with a commanding 13.9 (87) to 2.1 (13) victory over Old Brighton in difficult conditions. Mia Cowan, Charlotte Crough and Jordan Misfud all kicked three goals in an even team performance, while Renee Saulitis kicked Old Brighton’s only majors.

Old Scotch coach Dean Anderson was particularly pleased with his side’s improved start and ability to score into the breeze early.

“We started well which we haven’t been doing. (There’s been) some real focus on that,” Anderson said.

Old Scotch’s ball use and possession game again stood out, with Anderson highlighting the group’s ability to continue adapting despite regular changes to the line-up. Sophie McIntosh, Eleanor Butler and Sophie Pont were among the standouts, while Bridgette Hagan, Tani Dimattina and Eloise McCrae fought hard for Old Brighton.

Caulfield Grammarians further strengthened their credentials with an impressive 8.14 (62) to 2.0 (12) victory over St Kevin’s. Hollie Brodribb continued her outstanding start to the season with three goals, while Sarah Kenny added two majors in a dominant attacking display.

Caulfield coach Danielle Di Stefano said her side’s ability to sustain pressure and quick ball movement across four quarters was especially pleasing against quality opposition.

“Happy with our ability to put together another really strong four quarters against a top tier team,” Di Stefano said.

Brooke Randall, Jade Hillas and Milly Hines again led strongly in defence. For St Kevin’s, Sarah Cameron and Mia Giannopoulos kicked a goal each, while Georgia Harris and Elyce Hay battled hard throughout.

Fitzroy secured an important 15.4 (94) to 5.5 (35) victory over Old Geelong in an entertaining high-scoring contest. Beth Wilson and Stephanie Tredwell both starred with four goals as Fitzroy’s attacking game clicked into gear. Mila Lappin, Stephanie Tredwell and Beth Wilson were among Fitzroy’s best.

Old Geelong shared their goals between Jessie Gleeson, Sarah Hanmer, Emma Hoban, Tessa Longden and Mietta Passon, with Issy Tucker and Amy Halaby among their strongest contributors.

West Brunswick had the bye in Round 5.

In round 6 Caulfield Grammarians face off with Old Brighton, Old Geelong travel to play Westbourne Grammarians, West Brunswick matchup with St Kevin’s and Fitzroy come up against Kew. Old Scotch have the bye.
