Marcellin build momentum & Ormond are the team to beat – Division 1 Women’s Round 16 Review

The Division 1 Women’s home-and-away season has come to an end, with the focus now shifting towards finals.

Round 16 produced several convincing results, with Power House and Whitefriars finishing strongly, while Marcellin secured a tight victory over Oakleigh to build momentum heading into finals.

La Trobe University 2.0 (12) def by Ormond 8.5 (53)

Ormond closed out the home-and-away season with a commanding 41-point victory over La Trobe University.

The visitors controlled the contest for much of the afternoon, with their forward pressure and ability to create scoring opportunities proving the difference.

Isabella Gietzmann was a major threat inside 50, finishing with four goals, while Izabela Ignjic added two majors to lead the Monders’ attack.

Gietzmann and Ignjic were well supported by Olivia Steinfort, Maddi Wilson, Kitty Smyth and Arcadia Diaz, who all played important roles in Ormond’s convincing performance.

For the Trobers, Marleigh Andrews was the side’s sole goalkicker, while Andrews, Jessica Lowry, Kaitlyn Ritchie, Thara Sar, Eve Conlan and Claire Wilson were among their best performers.

Ormond finish the season with seven straight wins and go into finals as the team to beat after taking out the minor premiership.

Power House 8.12 (60) def Monash Blues 2.2 (14)

Power House finished the home-and-away season in dominant fashion, running out 46-point winners over Monash.

The House controlled the contest from the outset and produced a strong all-round performance to finish the regular season on a high.

Lauren Boyle, Alli Charles and Joelly Firmin provided plenty of scoreboard impact, with each player finishing with two goals.

Grace Read, Sinead Doorley, Alice McAlea, Joelly Firmin, Lily Butler-Woollard and Suki Long were among Power House’s best contributors.

Monash fought hard throughout the contest, with Emily Conroy, Gabrielle Perry, Ruby Hancock, Emily Chea, Samantha Rodgers and Sarah-Jade Rose leading the way for the visitors.

Power House head into the finals with plenty of confidence, defeating the fourth placed Blues and finishing second on the ladder.

Oakleigh 3.5 (23) def by Marcellin 5.3 (33)

Marcellin secured a hard-fought 10-point victory over Oakleigh to finish the home-and-away season with a positive result and finish third on the ladder.

The contest remained competitive throughout, with the Eagles eventually doing enough to hold off the Krushers and secure the win.

Charlotte McGilp and T. Zagontinos were the key contributors on the scoreboard for Marcellin, with both players finishing with two goals.

Alana Pane, Lilly Kol, Charlotte McGilp, Laura Robertson, Tessa Ramsay and Anja Anderson were among Marcellin’s best performers.

Oakleigh was led by Sienna Bernardo, Lily Firth, Daisy Bird, Elise Kenna, Georgie Nancarrow and Gisselle Jones-Wilson, while Samantha Warlond provided two goals for the home side.

Old Carey 1.6 (12) def Whitefriars 9.7 (61)

Whitefriars finished the home-and-away season in impressive fashion, defeating Old Carey by 49 points.

The Friars controlled the contest and consistently found ways to generate scoring opportunities, producing a comprehensive performance to head into finals with plenty of confidence.

Clare Fernandes and Bella Giannangelo led the way in front of goal with two goals each. Carly Notting, Kaitlyn Wallace, Allegra Mattioli, Natasha Hoezda and Cassie Bruce were among Whitefriars’ best performers.

The Panthers battled hard throughout the match, with Francesca Anderson, Sadie Chun, Lucy Wynne, Maya Seabury, Kellie McLeod and Olivia Rabl among their strongest contributors.

With the final home-and-away round now complete, attention turns to finals, with the Division 1 Women’s postseason beginning this weekend and the premiership race set to heat up.
