Three New VAFA Life Members Inducted

Three wonderful servants of the VAFA were recognised and honoured as they were awarded Life Membership at the 2026 VAFA Awards Night.

Davina Connors-Calhaem

Davina Connors-Calhaem has made an outstanding contribution to the VAFA and Australian football over more than two decades. Following over 20 years of service to Old Xaverians, including as Club President, Davina became the VAFA’s first female Director in 2004, serving on the Board for more than 10 years. Alongside then CEO Michael Sholly, she was instrumental in the early discussions that led to the establishment of the VAFA’s female competition, now the largest of its kind in Australia. Through her roles at Xavier College and her continued involvement with the VAFA, Davina has been a passionate advocate and tireless contributor to the Association. Her service, leadership and lasting impact make her a highly deserving recipient of VAFA Life Membership.

Ian Cordner

Ian Cordner is a distinguished servant of the VAFA, with an outstanding playing and leadership record across University Blacks, Old Melburnians and the Big V. A three-time premiership player and multiple club best-and-fairest winner, Ian captained Old Melburnians from 1977–80 and in 1978 became the only player in VAFA history to captain a premiership team while also winning the Section B Best & Fairest and leading goalkicker awards. A Big V representative and captain, he was selected as All-Australian Captain in 1979. Ian has continued his contribution through extensive VAFA and Big V committee service, including as Big V Chairman since 2015, and was recognised as a Big V Champion in 2008 and elevated to Big V Legend in 2013.

Michael Sholly

Michael Sholly has made an outstanding contribution to the VAFA, serving as CEO from 2004 to 2017 and guiding the Association through significant growth and change. His achievements include establishing the VAFA Women’s and Thirds competitions, strengthening the Association’s financial position, securing major community football funding, and expanding the VAFA’s international and Big V programs. A long-standing Old Xaverians member, Michael also coached the club to an A-Grade premiership in 2003. His ongoing support of the VAFA reflects more than three decades of dedicated service to community football.

We thank and congratulate Davina, Ian and Michael for their incredible service to the VAFA. We are proud to have them join the ranks of our Life Members.
