Prior to changing their name to the Preston Bullants at the start of 2016, Northern Blues formally became a senior club in the VAFA for the 2013 season and they wasted no time in making their mark on the competition. Three premierships in four seasons was a fantastic result as the Blues (who play in red) have already progressed from Division 4 to Division 1. Prior to becoming a senior club in Division 4, Northern Blues served an apprenticeship in the VAFA for a couple of seasons as first an U19s club, then they entered a side in the Thirds for the 2012 in preparation for their senior debut. Northern Blues made history for their first flag in 2013, when they won their way through to the grand final having finished in sixth place (2013 was the first year the VAFA had a final six). The following year, the Blues were the hunted as they finished the home and away season on top and again won their three finals to take a second premiership in as many seasons. 2016 was arguably their greatest achievement, finishing third on the ladder and winning all three finals including a 12-point Grand Final victory over St John’s. Midfielder Damon Marcon produced his second best-on-ground performance from three flags, while senior coach George Wakim received his second VAFA Coach of the Year (Divisional) Award. Sean Calcedo won the Division 1 Pepper Medal in 2018 and 2019, adding to the family tally of three won by his identical brother, Dean. Their women’s team broke through for its first flag in 2019 – the same year Anita Ovenden polled 31 votes from 14 games.
