TRIPLE TREAT FOR OLD XAVERIANS

By VAFA · September 21, 2013
TRIPLE TREAT FOR OLD XAVERIANS

Old Xaverians have won the 2013 Premier Section Premiership defeating St Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 50 points in the Grand Final at Sportscover Arena. It was a triple treat for Xavs who earlier won the Premier Thirds and the Premier Reserves flags.
In the main game it was Old Xaverians were dominant all day to record their 13th premiership in the VAFA’s top section. Chris Waller won the Jock Nelson Medal for the best on the ground unanimously from the three sets of judges.
Old Xavs opened the game kicking with the breeze and held the Tigers to just one behind in the opening quarter whilst Jake Williams kicked two goals and Marcus Allan was on the end of another.
In the second term St Bedes/Mentone were finally able to break their duck when McGettigan goaled from a contest on the goal line. However it was goals to Matt Handley and another beauty to Marcus Allan that had Xavs taking a 22 point lead into half time.
The third term was all about Old Xaverians as competition leading goal kicker Brendan Goss kicked three for the term. His third goal was immediately followed by some remonstrating between players that saw the umpire pay a free kick to Chris Larkins from the goal square for a 12 point play. If the Tigers were still any chance at that stage, it was snuffed out there.
Xavs took a comanding 74 point lead into the final term and whilst Old Xaverians remained goalless the celebration at the final siren was no less subdued as the Xavs had won another flag.
The Tigers did manage late goals to bring some respectability to the scoreboard and the final margin was 50 points.
Celebrations for Old Xaverians were dampened somewhat by the fact Murphy Ambrose went to hospital with a suspected broken jaw from a clash at the start of the last quarter. With the Old Xaverians water carriers looking for his teeth between the blades of grass of Sportscover Arena Ambrose was on his way to hospital and missed the medal presentation at the end of the match.
It has been a mighty season for Old Xaverians and this team has played superbly throughout. Congratulations to the premiers of Premier Section.
