Blues bounce back big time, Tonners, SKOB, Lions 4-0

University Blues bounced back from three straight losses to record their first win of 2018 with a comprehensive 53-point victory over De La Salle at Waverly Oval. Nine goals from Kieran Harper, Tom Quinn and Tim Harper paved the way for the Blues as the team piled on nine goals to three in the opening half and kicked another eight to five to close out the game. Ayce Cordy and Ryan Eade each kicked two for the Blues, while Sam Schulz impressed in his second game for the club. Jake Williams and Liam Murphy were the two best for De La but they now fall to their third loss from four games and sit eighth on the ladder. It was a handy percentage boost for the Blues who jump to seventh.

Old Melburnians and Old Scotch played out a see-saw battle on the new surface at Elsternwick Park, with OMs running out eight-point winners and claiming the Australian Rules Cup on the 160th anniversary of the first-ever game between the schools. OMs held an 11-point lead at the first break before the Cardinals kicked three unanswered in the second for a five-point lead at half time. Both sides struggled for accuracy in the third but a total of five goals to three in the second half gave OMs their second consecutive win. Matt Thomas starred with two goals in a BOG performance for OMs, while teammates Sam Hooper and Al Armstrong also nailed a pair of majors each. Jack Bull continued his outstanding form for the Cardinals and he was joined by Lachlan Strathmore as their only multiple goals kickers with two each. The Cardinals remain winless after four rounds albeit by a total of just 33 points at 8.25ppg.

Old Brighton made it four wins in a row via a thrilling 14-point victory over Old Xaverians at Brighton Beach Oval. The Tonners trailed by 14 points at half time but ignited with seven goals to three in the third to take a two-goal lead into the final term. The Xavs, who were fighting for their first win of the year, got on top in the clearance battle and hit the lead twice in the fourth term, but goals to Tom King and Andrew Dewer sealed a spectacular come-from-behind victory for the Tonners. Thomas Garner was sensational for the Tonners, while Dylan Verney was a standout in defence when the Xavs were on top in the final term. Harry Hill left the ground early in the fourth with a cut on his forehead but returned soon after and helped the Tonners get back into the match with his class and clearance work. Matt Margin, Matt Handley and Brendan Goss each kicked three goals for the Xavs, with one of Goss’ an unbelievable banana from the boundary in the first. Xavs sit in 10th spot on the ladder following the loss but went one step closer to their first win.

Seven unanswered goals in the second and third quarters helped St Kevin’s OB to their fourth consecutive victory, defeating Old Trinity by 42 points at TH King Oval. Leading by four points at quarter time, SKOB flicked the switched over the ensuing two terms with 47 points to nine, before both sides finished with four goals each in the last. Shaun Kennedy was a standout for SKOB with four majors while James Strauss and Cal Matheson impressed across the ground. Harry Tinney stood tall for the T’s for the second straight week as their best player and was joined by Ben Howell and the in-form Anthony Scott. Both sides remain the same on the ladder with SKOB occupying top spot and the T’s in fourth.

10 goals to four in the second half helped Collegians to a 32-point win over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and their fourth victory in a row. Scores were tied at 34-apiece at half time after the Tigers opened their account with 10 points from their first 14 scoring shots. The Lions hit their straps in the second half led by Anthony Bruhn’s four-goal performance. Corey Cassidy and Courtney Hylton were outstanding for the Lions, while Michael Barnes and Simon Richards led the way for the Tigers. It was an impressive performance from the 1-3 Tigers who had three more scoring shots than their opponents.
