The Glen Eira Gryphons of today has one of the most colourful histories in the VAFA. A series of foundation clubs, mergers and amalgamations can be summarised as follows:
1909: Glen Huntly Football Club founded.
1933: Glen Huntly Amateurs founded.
1958: CBC St Kilda Old Boys AFC founded.
1970: South Caulfield FC founded.
1974: Glen Huntly Amateurs and Glen Huntly FC merge.
1982: Balaclava FC formed from the merger between AMP society FC and North Caulfield YCW.
1991: St Anthony’s Glen Huntly FC merge with Balaclava AFC merge to create Glen Huntly Amateur Football Club.
1991: Monash Gryphons founded.
1992: St. Kilda CBC OC and South Caulfield merge to become St. Kilda South Caulfield.
1999: Glen Huntly AFC and St Kilda South Caulfield merge to create the Glen Eira Saints. 2017: A partnership with McKinnon Secondary College sees Glen Eira field their first U19’s and Senior Women’s teams.
2017: The Monash Gryphons and Glen Eira Saints finalise their merger and become the Glen Eira Gryphons.
The Glen Eira Gryphons have 14 VAFA Senior Men’s Premierships. St Kilda CBC OC can lay claim to five of them, Balaclava, AMP Society and Glen Eira Gryphons two each (including minor Premiership) with St. Kilda South Caulfield, Glen Eira Saints and the Monash Gryphons one each.
In 2017, the club entered into a partnership with McKinnon Secondary College to enter an U19s team – Old McKinnon/Glen Eira – as the players were predominantly McKinnon students. That team claimed the U19 Section 4 flag in 2018. A Senior Women’s team was founded in 2019 and claimed the ultimate prize in their first year winning the Division 4 Premiership in an undefeated season.
The Glen Eira Gryphons were crowned VAFA Club Champions in 2021, a remarkable achievement that we are all extremely proud of.
