Premier Section provided us with much drama but it was elsewhere that teams were able to celebrate.
University Blues are out of the relegation zone for the first time since round 5 thanks to a 9 point win over the visiting De La Salle. It was a double blow for the La Sallians as they also fell to sixth spot, now two games behind Old Scotch who remain in fourth. Neither team managed to score in an intense final quarter.
The unfortunate team that drops to ninth spot are Beaumaris. The Sharks fought back valiantly but ultimately lost at Old Scotch by just 11 points. The Cardinals win sees them take a mortgage on a finals berth. The Sharks host Uni Blues next week for a chance to switch places again.
Collegians are still finals chances as they secured a three point win over University Blacks, in doing so the Lions moved to fifth. Although two games outside the four and with an incredibly tough run home you couldn’t possibly write off the back to back premiers. Blacks came home late as they so often have this year but ran out of time.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers comprehensively outplayed St Bernards in the second half at the Snake Pit to move to second spot. The Tigers who won by 41 today, host Old Xaverians at Brindisi St next week in the match of the round.
Old Xaverians did as they had to do in their match at Old Carey. The less said about the luckless Panthers season the better as they succumbed to the Premier Section heavyweights by 128 points. Goss and Handley both booted 7 goals each in the rout.
Premier B offered a couple of shocks so where to start? Perhaps we start at Parkdale Vultures who were playing for their season and next as they hosted Fitzroy. Alas the Vultures couldn’t conquer the team the defeated to earn promotion to this section 12 months ago. The Roys 26 point win enough to secure they will feature in Premier B next year.
The first shock came at Princes Park where Old Haileybury succumbed to a more determined Werribee by 12 points. Both sides had little to play for other than pride and the Tigers can certainly head home with the head held high. Look out for any other Werribee opposition in the final two weeks, particularly if Harrington is firing like he did today with his six goals.
The second shock came from Gary Smorgon Oval as AJAX were all over St Kevins to win by 39 points. The St Kevins loss revives memories of their finish in 2010. That year the SKOBS were top with 4 weeks to go and they missed the finals altogether. This year, they were three games clear in fourth spot with three to go and are now 2 games clear with two to go. Finals are still not 100%. For the Jackas, it shows how much they missed their stars in recent weeks, they can only win their games and hope for more SKOB slipups.
Old Melburnians were in a ding-dong battle with a desperate Caulfield Grammarians for most of the afternoon at the Junction Oval. It was OMs that came away with a relatively comfortable 31 point win in the end.
The supposed match of the round turned out to be a fizzer as Old Trinity were too good for Old Brighton at Daley Oval. The OT’s running out 8 goal winners.
In Premier C, Banyule moved out of the relegation places after they held on for an 8 point win over bottom side NOBs-St Pats. The Bears are now 8th at the expense of Old Camberwell.
The Wellers could never get going in their clash with a resurgent Monash Blues. The Blues needed to bounce back with a win and they did so in style as the defeated Old Camberwell by 59 points at the Uni.
Adrian Del Monte bagged five goals for Old Ivanhoe on the way to ending PEGS hopes of a 2013 finals appearance. Old Ivanhoe were too good for the Bombers, winning by 43 points out at Essendon.
In a low scoring first half Oakleigh trailed ladder leaders Mazenod by just a point at the main break. The floodgates opened in the second half as the Nodders kicked 10 goals to three to win by 47 points.
It was a similar case at Marcellin as the less fancied Peninsula were within a point at the half. The home side then booted nine goals to four to run out 35 point victors.
