PREMIER – PREMIER C WRAP

By VAFA · August 31, 2013
PREMIER – PREMIER C WRAP

We start in Premier B where the Second Semi Final at Sportscover Arena saw old Brighton defeat Old Trinity and triumphantly return to Premier Section for 2014. The Tonners were able to kick five goals into the wind in the opening quarter whilst Old Trinity could only manage two with the breeze. A seven goal second term  for Old Brighton virtually killed off the game – Karayannis had five goals to half time. Old Trinity responded in the third to cut the margin to five goals but Old Brighton just edged a relatively low scoring final term to run out 39 point winners.
In the Premier C 2nd Semi Final, Marcellin started the better against Mazenod but the Nodders went on to kick 14 unanswered goals to run out 89 point winners to secure promotion to Premier B in 2014. Heath Black slotted 6 goals, and Nick Jook kicked five as Mazenod strutted their stuff on Casey Fields. Marcellin will need to regroup quickly in time for a Preliminary Final against either Old Ivanhoe or Monash Blues next week.
In Premier Section Round 18 felt almost anticlimactic to the finals action going elsewhere but the football on display was anything but.
A second draw of the season was played out between St Bernards and Uni Blues at the Snakepit. The come from behind draw leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of both sets of supporters, however the post season beers will be slightly better tasting at St Bernards who can look forward to Premier Section action in 2014.
At Brindisi St, Beaumaris led for most of the day against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, before a Tigers onslaught of seven goals in the last quarter saw them win by five goals. The win saw the Tigers secure second spot and a 2nd Semi Final against Old Xaverians next Saturday at Sportscover Arena.
Old Xaverians tuned up for their second semi final with a 44 point win over Collegians at the Trott. Handley and Goss both kicked five goals each for the visitors.
Old Carey bid farewell to Premier Section in a better performance than previous weeks. They competed well with De La Salle, but ultimately weren’t good enough to have a final win in Premier. Haley kicked four goals in Greg McLoughlin’s last game in charge of De La as they recorded a 42 point win.
In a preview of next week’s second semi final, Old Scotch were seemingly way too strong for Uni Blacks as the Cardinals recorded a 47 point win at University. These two meet again on Sunday at Sportscover so it will be interesting to see what Blacks have learnt.
