Here’s what the clubs said after the weekends games.
Old Trinity website following their 5-point win over St Bernards
It was a sense of deja vu when the siren blew to signal the end of the game on Saturday, with the T’s again emulating their heroics of round one last year, with a five-point come-from-behind win against St Bernards. For most of the afternoon the Snowdogs were in command with their backline on top and their midfielders ensuring the forwards had quality supply. Inaccuracy in the second quarter ultimately hurt the away side, registering 4.7 for the quarter, while Trinity could only manage two majors. As both teams entered the sheds at half time St Bernards had all the momentum and lead by 27 points.(Read More)
Old Scotch website after their 24-point win over University Blacks
A tough pre-season for the Cardinals came to fruition on Saturday for the seniors as we caught reigning premiers Uni Blacks off guard with hard running, team pressure and an attacking brand of football. Ex-captain Mark Passador and his team of experts must be wondering what all the fuss about coaching is, as Scotch upset the favoured Blacks on their home turf by implementing strategies and adhering to structures that were well-drilled throughout the pre-season. Old Xaverians website following their 43-point win over Collegians
In recent years, Opening Day at Toorak Park has seemed more often about recognising achievement than laying the foundation of the new campaign. We’ve seen plenty of pennants raised but too rarely heard the victory song. Today, there wasn’t a flag in sight, but at 4:45pm only the deaf and the dead could have failed to hear the strains of the raucous a cappella emanating from the locker room. It’s good to sing, to forget about one’s troubles for a while. (Read More)
University Blues website after their 34-point win over De La Salle
The senior side selected for the away journey looked strong; however with 8 changes from the Premier B Grand Final there is always some uncertainty. The team certainly looked better for the inclusion of duel B&F winner Ross Young returning from a season with Richmond VFL. Also pleasing was the naming of debutant Jack Wood after developing in the Thirds and Reserves over the last 2 seasons.
Hampton Rovers website after their 69-point win over Mazenod OC
Hampton Rovers announced their return to Premier B section of the VAFA with a convincing 69-point victory over Mazenod at Boss James Reserve on Saturday. It was a big day at Boss James Reserve with around 75 people at the opening home game luncheon of the year and the premiership flag unfurled by club legend Max Grimmer prior to the main game. St Kevins website after their 4-point win over St Bedes/Mentone
St Kevin’s kicked off the season with a heart stopper, defeating the highly fancied St Bedes Mentone by four points in an enthralling contest at Brindisi Street on Saturday. It was a tight tussle throughout with SKOB holding sway at the quarter time and half time breaks. Coach Daniel Harford was pleased with the effort across all lines in the opening half. “A 20 point lead at half time was a great result. We’d worked hard defensively and were able to stifle the Tigers run and carry. We just needed to take more of our chances”. (Read More)
Old Brighton website following their 77-point win against Fitzroy FC
Old Brighton Grammarians travelled to Brunswick Street to launch a season which will eventually see us playing on a brand new surface at South Road. Although we are excited to finally be able to play on a decent surface at home in a few weeks, it is difficult to imagine a better place to play footy than the glorious parkland that preserves the historic traditions of the Fitzroy Football Club.
Oakleigh website following their 81-point win against Old Camberwell
Oakleigh started the season in fine style with a crushing 81 point victory over Old Camberwell at Gordon Barnard Reserve on Saturday. In fine sunny conditions, with Liam Gillard playing his 50th game, the Oaks went hard early drawing first blood and looked to be making it a one-sided affair until the hosts hit back to trail by 3 points at the first change. Old Ivanhoe website after their 50-point win over Monash Blues
The Seniors seemingly picked up where the Reserves left off, starting with enthusiasm and hunger for the contest. With a long summer spent learning a new game-style, the Hoers pleased coaching staff and supporters alike with effective switching of play and utilising the space on the ground. Finding their feet, the seniors kept Monash goal-less in the second quarter to open up a 27-point half-time lead. (Read More)
Old Haileybury website following their 53-point win over Therry Penola
The seniors started quite slowly and it was Therry who scored the first 2 goals and were peppering away early. However as the quarter progressed the bloods started to team together and get the running game going. Haileybury kicked the next 6 goals to be up by 22 points at qtr time. The second quarter was good for the home team kicking 4.4 to 4 behinds. (Read More)
St Mary’s/Salesian Website following their 93-point win over Yarra Valley OB
In ideal conditions with sunshine and little or no wind, St Mary’s/Salesian (led by Brett Gatehouse) kicked to the Leeds Street end in the first stanza. The game was open and high scoring seemed likely. The Saints began the better, Josh Tanner kicking first major and Sid Jones another soon after from a free kick (for a high tackle) on an acute angle.
