University Blues jumped to third spot on the William Buck premier ladder, defeating University Blacks by 21 points in the derby at Uni Oval. The lead chopped and changed throughout the first three quarters with the Blues taking a two-point lead into the last break. However, four goals to one in the fourth term maintained the Blues’ winning form with Tim Geappen backing up his four goals last week with another bag of five. George Cameron was named best afield for the second week in a row, starring through the midfield, while Geappen’s fellow key pillar up forward, Jamie Mugavin, kicked four again. Bede Mahon and Harry Allen starred for the Blacks, while Sam Bennett was their sole multiple goal kicker. The Blacks sit ninth but on the same number of wins (3) as Old Trinity and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers secured their most important win of 2017 as they defeated Old Trinity by 37 points and climbed to seventh spot on the ladder. Trailing by four points at the last break, the Tigers clicked in the fourth and piled on seven unanswered goals as they ran away with the win. Geroge Rowlands and Michael Barnes kicked three majors each for the Tigers, while Brayden O’Toole was named best on ground. Andrew Kyriacopoulos returned to form and was the T’s best, while Jack Osborn top-scored with three majors. The T’s have now lost five in a row and sit eighth on the ladder.
Old Melburnians returned to the winners’ column with a comprehensive 52-point victory over Beaumaris at Sportscover Arena. OMs booted four unanswered goals in the first term before the Sharks hit back with 3.8 in the second and trailed by just seven points at the main break. Led by Matt Thomas, Josh Freezer and Tom Cameron, OMs dominated the second half with nine goals to two. Al Armstrong bagged three majors for the Redlegs, while William Murton and Joshua Trew fought hard for the winless Sharks. OMs sit just a game outside the four with five wins and a draw so far this year.
St Kevin’s secured their 10th win from the first 11 rounds, defeating Collegians by 47 points at St Kevin’s College. Leading by 11 points at three quarter time, SKOB exploded with seven goals to one in the final term. SKOB midfielder Gerard Gleeson kicked two goals and was named best afield as he continues to impress, while Zach Ginies feasted on his midfield’s delivery with six goals. Viv Michie and Sam Hibbins continued their strong form for the Lions, who remain second and a game and a half clear of the Blues and De La. SKOB themselves move a game and a half clear of the Lions at the top of William Buck Premier.
De La Salle secured a top four spot with an 10-point come-from-behind victory over Old Xaverians at Waverley Oval. Trailing at every break throughout the match and by nine points at three quarter time, De La kicked 3.6 to 1.1 as they ran out the game the stronger of the two sides. Sam Pickett’s increasingly impressive form was at its highest with the De La forward kicking four goals, while Jason Tutt and Sam Williams continued their outstanding form. Nick Wynne and Murphy Ambrose shone for Xavs and Brendan Goss top-scored with three majors. Xavs now fall outside the four into fifth spot.
