Eagles, Wellers defeat top two in Premier C

Hampton Rovers caused the upset of the round when they defeated Williamstown CYMS in a three-point thriller at Boss James Reserve and claimed their fourth win of the year. The Rovers kicked six goals to two in the opening half and led by as much as 29 at the main break, before the CYs fought back with 10 majors to six in the final two quarters. Captain Christian Carnovale continued the elite form he showcased for the Big V U19’s last weekend with two goals and a BOG performance for the Rovers, while Luke Deville and Josh Pavlou also impressed. Benjamin Deller was the key component of the CYs comeback as he kicked five goals, while Sean McVernon was their best player for the second straight match. Both sides remain in the ladder position they started the weekend, with the CYs fourth and Rovers ninth.

Old Geelong are one of four teams at 6-6 in Premier C after they dismantled Kew to the tune of 117 points at Como Park. 10 goals to two in the first half set up the comprehensive victory for the Ogs, before they further hammered the point home with 11 unanswered goals in the second half. George Burbury, Joshua Hoevenaars and Callum Wood each kicked four goals for the Ogs, while Jeremy Nettlefold was named best afield. Jack Delbridge and Michael Henderson worked tirelessly for the Bears, but the 10^th-placed side were unable to add to their two first-term goals as the match progressed. The loss ended a two-game winning streak for the Bears.

Old Camberwell registered their most important victory for the season as they defeated the top-of-the-table Caulfield Grammarians by nine points at Gordon Barnard Reserve. Trailing by six points at three quarter time, the Wellers kicked three unanswered goals in the fourth as Ben Hart, Joe Arnold and James Allen took control. Hart finished with three goals alongside Sam Powell while Arnold and Nick Adamson kicked two each. Thomas Small led the charge as the Fields’ best player while young gun Nick Baltas and Declan Reilly kicked three each. Despite the loss, the Fields are still two games clear on top of the ladder and the Wellers remain in the hunt for finals as percentage has them outside the four.

Old Mentonians ended a four-game losing streak after they knocked off Old Ivanhoe by 31 points at Keysborough Playing Fields. Leading by one goals at the first break, the Panthers set their victory up with five goals to one in the second and created a buffer the Hoers were unable to rein in. Kyle Conlon starred in a BOG display for the Panthers, while James Dalzotto top-scored with four goals. Carl Groth fought valiantly for the Hoers with three goals from the midfield but it was not enough as they slumped tot heir fifth loss. The Hoers remain third but their percentage of just 92.19 is the sixth best in Premier C. The Panthers sit eighth with five wins.

Marcellin claimed their sixth win for the year and third from their last four games after they defeated Old Haileybury by 41 points at Marcellin College. Five goals to one in the first term and a further seven to two in the third set up the victory for the Eagles, with Jeremiah Antypas kicking five goals in his first senior game of 2017 after watching his sister Magdelene star for the Big V last weekend. Andrew Kay also bagged five for the Eagles while James Robertson kicked two for the fourth consecutive game and was named best afield. John Nicolopoulos was outstanding at the other end for the Bloods, kicking five goals alongside a standout performance from Ben White.
