Barnstorming R2 wins in Prem C Women’s

Aquinas vs Brunswick Renegades

Aquinas were looking to continue their good form after beating Ivanhoe quite convincingly last week, while the Renegades were searching for their first win of the season after losing in a fighting performance against UHS-VU. Aquinas looked on top early, kicking the only goal of the first quarter as they took a seven-point lead into the first break. Brunswick hit the scoreboard in the second term, as did Aquinas and they were able to extend the margin to 16 at the main break. A 32-1 second half saw Aquinas blow the Renegades away and win by a strong 47 points. Amongst Aquinas best were Meg Dargan and Sophie Patterson who, between them, kicked five of the teams eight goals. Jessica Brown was the lone goalkicker for the Renegades with Samara Griffin and Nicola Mackenzie having decent games. The Renegades will push for their first win next week against a strong St Bedes/Mentone outfit whilst Aquinas will look to go 3-0 when they take on Mazenod.

Ivanhoe vs St Bedes/Mentone Tigers

The Tigers would look to continue their good form after a huge 62-point win in Round 1 whilst Ivanhoe searched for their first win of the season after a loss to Aquinas. The Tigers were dominant early as they commanded the first quarter to lead by 18 points at quarter time. Momentum was virtually flipped in the second quarter with Ivanhoe getting the better of the Tigers as they kicked two goals to none, trimming the margin to just six points at half time. The Tigers came out after half time and looked to build on their small lead, although Ivanhoe weren’t giving in. The third quarter proved to be quite a scrap with the only scores being two behinds to the Tigers. They held a slim eight-point lead heading into the final term. The Tigers were inaccurate late in the game but still managed to flex their muscle, kicking 2.6 to close out the game to just one behind from Ivanhoe, leading to a strong 25-point win. Madeleine Tilly was good again for the Tigers, as she hit the scoreboard for a single major, along with Tayla Mcalroy and Rebekah Halprin. Rose Alonzo being the only multiple goalkicker of the game with two. Fiona Tansley and Emily Jane Johnson provided the goals for Ivanhoe. The Tigers travel to Brunswick to face the Renegades next week as Ivanhoe will play UHS-VU at Brens Oval as they continue to look for their first win.

Richmond Central vs Mazenod

Richmond Central were beaten comprehensively last week and were looking for some more fight this week against Mazenod. Mazenod were coming off a strong win themselves against North Brunswick. The game was hot early and a goalless first term saw Mazenod lead by just four behinds. Both teams managed to hit the scoreboard in the second quarter but Mazenod were still the better of the two sides as they held a 12-point lead into the break. Mazenod came out strongly after half time and piled on the goals. Four third quarter goals and three in the last, along with keeping Richmond Central to just one behind in the second half meant that Mazenod ran away with a thumping 57-point win. Annalise Vine, Charlotte Skinner and Adele Kerley all kicked two goals each for Mazenod. Richmond Central will be confident that they can bounce back when they take on North Brunswick away from home next week, as Mazenod will look to continue winning ways as they travel to Manson Reserve to battle undefeated Aquinas.

UHS-VU vs North Brunswick

The only Sunday game of the round saw UHS-VU and the Bulls do battle at Brens Oval. The Bulls were outplayed by Mazenod last week and UHS-VU managed to get the job done against the Renegades. The game was all UHS-VU early as they piled on six unanswered goals in the first term as well as keeping the Bulls scoreless, to take a 38-point lead into quarter time. The Bulls managed to show some fight in the second term as they kicked two goals to UHS-VU’s four, trailing by 52-points at the half. UHS-VU continued to apply scoreboard pressure in the third and extended their margin to 70 points at 3 quarter time as they kicked three goals for the quarter. The Bulls applied some pressure of their own in the last quarter to restrict UHS-VU to just a goal, though they were no match for them however as UHS-VU went on to run away as 78-point winners. Madeline Hince had yet another day out, as she booted a whopping seven goals, carrying on from a bag of five in Round 1. Gretta Hankinson and Angelica Vaira also kicked two goals each. For the Bulls, Charlee West and Ella Ryan were the goalkickers. UHS-VU play a winless Ivanhoe next week at home as the Bulls host Richmond Central where both sides will be looking for their first win.
