Aquinas, Tigers dominate Round 4

Aquinas vs UHS-VU

Round 4 of the Women’s Premier C competition kicked off with the heavyweights, Aquinas and UHS-VU, battling for their fourth straight win of the season at Aquinas College. No one could have predicted what would ensue after the opening bounce of this contest as Aquinas dominated from the word go. They kicked two goals to no score in the first term and broke away to a 14-point lead. The second quarter saw even further dominance from Aquinas as they managed to boot a further four goals to extend their lead to an even seven goals at the main break. The third quarter was nothing like anything we’ve seen to this point in the league in terms of dominance, as Aquinas piled on a whopping seven goals to no score, yet again, to lead by an incredible 85 points at 3 quarter time. UHS-VU were on track to be hammered by a triple figure margin. UHS managed to show some fight in the final term as they didn’t allow Aquinas to run right over the top of them. They managed to keep Aquinas scoreless off the back of their seven-goal term as the final margin was 76 points. UHS superstar, Madeline Hince, was absent for this massive game and it proved pivotal with UHS struggling to hit the scoreboard all game. Laura McHugh added four to her goal tally for the season for Aquinas, as Holly Spicer and Molly McDonald kicked two each. Marlo Zambelli was UHS’s lone goalkicker. Aquinas will hunt their fifth win of the season when they travel to North Brunswick to face the Bulls. UHS-VU will be looking for a strong response as they host Richmond Central.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers vs North Brunswick

The Tigers flew out of the blocks as they kicked five goals to one in the opening term, gaining a 26-point buffer going into quarter time. The second term saw a much closer contest at the Tigers would only extend their lead by four points after only kicking the one goal for the quarter. After half time, the Tigers looked to pick up where they started the game. Wasted opportunities saw them kick two goals and six behinds for the quarter as they kept the Bulls scoreless, leading by 48 points at 3 quarter time. The Tigers managed to keep the Bulls scoreless in the last as well as booting another four goals. The Bulls could only manage a mere two behinds after quarter time as the Tigers waltzed to a huge 77-point win. Nina Coghill kicked three for the Tigers and Rose Alonzo and Ina Brodahl added two of their own, as the Tigers had eight individual goalkickers. The Bulls will aim to bounce back next week when they host Aquinas. St Bedes/Mentone will aim to keep their good form going when they host the in-form Mazenod.

Ivanhoe vs Richmond Central

Ivanhoe and the Snakes both searched for their first wins of the year when they battled it out at Ivanhoe Park. Ivanhoe set the tone in the first quarter by kicking the only two goals as the Snakes managed a lone behind. They continued on in the second quarter, similarly to the first, kicking another two goals to no score, to hold a 29-point lead into the main break. The Snakes were able to take it up to Ivanhoe after half time as they kicked the only goal of the term, reducing the margin to 24 points at the final change. Ivanhoe finished off strongly after the Snakes troubled them in the third, as they kicked two goals to none, pulling away and getting home by 36 points. Zoe Doyle and Emily Jane Johnson both kicked two for Ivanhoe while Kellie Birkett was Richmond Central’s only goalkicker. Ivanhoe will take massive confidence into next week against the Renegades as the Snakes continue their pursuit for their first win of the year when they face UHS-VU.

Mazenod vs Brunswick Renegades

The first half was unexpectedly tightly contested, with just the one goal being kicked by Mazenod. They led 9 points at the half after leading by the same margin at quarter time. It wasn’t long after the half time break that Mazenod began to flex their muscles, piling on three goals to none in the third quarter to extend out to a 27-point buffer at the final change. The Renegades were not short of effort in the last but were no match for Mazenod as they added a further two goals in the final quarter to run away to a convincing 39-point win. For Mazenod’s six goals, they had six individual goalkickers with Claudia Maguire and Tiani Wiropuspito also amongst their best. For the Renegades, Eliza Cole and Tahlia Hayes were their best players on the day. Mazenod will have a huge challenge next week against the Tigers away from home as the Renegades have Ivanhoe in what will be an intriguing contest.
