Saints bring down Bombers, Wellers alone at the top

St Mary’s Salesian registered their first win of the season when they defeated PEGS by 15 points at Ferndale Park. The Bombers jumped the Saints in the first half and led by 18 points at the main break before the Saints flicked the switch with seven unanswered goals in the third term. Max Holmes and D’Arcy Grant were outstanding for the Saints and Thomas McDermott top-scored with a bag of five. Thomas Saggio and Hugh Schiavello booted three each for the Bombers. After starting the year with two wins, PEGS have now lost three on the trot.

Old Camberwell remains the only undefeated side in Division 1 Men’s following their comprehensive 89-point victory over Therry Penola. The Wellers put on a defensive masterclass and allowed just three Lions goals while piling on 17 thanks largely to Caine Hillier (6) and Riley Verbi (5). Harry Crothers was named best afield for the Wellers ahead of the goal kickers, while Cairan Wrigglesworth and Nicholas Castaldi excelled for the Lions.

Oakleigh delivered their strongest performance of the season when they downed Kew by nine points at Victoria Park. The Bears, who were previously undefeated, were playing catch up from the get-go as the Krushers kicked four goals to one in Q1 and maintained an arm’s length for the remainder of the match. Aaron Cloke starred in front of goal with four and took his season tally to 22, while Harry Boontjes and Patrick Ioannidis continued their strong form. Billy Shute was a standout for the Bears for the second consecutive week. Michael Hannan and Nathan Sambevski each kicked three.

Prahran Assumption recorded their third win in a row, and fourth for the season, with a 42-point win over Old Peninsula at Toorak Park. The Two Blues booted four goals to one in the opening term and were rarely threatened as they added nine goals to seven thereafter. He’s been in incredible form, but Matt Clifford took it to a new level with five goals and a BOG display for Prahran while Jackson Boland slotted three goals. Joshua Goudge and Benjamin Stewart nailed two each for the Pirates.

The 2019 Division 2 Grand Final re-match certainly did not live up to the excitement of the original after Whitefriars defeated Brunswick by 82 points at Whitefriars College. The Friars jumped out to a 32-point lead at the half-time break before dominating the second half with 12 goals to three. James Harkins starred for the Friars with five goals and a BOG performance. Angus Hands and Jordan De Zilwa were standouts. Despite the loss, Matt Palmer continued his fantastic form for the NOBS.
