Aquinas, Tigers break away from Prem C pack

UHS-VU vs Aquinas

Round 11 kicked off at Brens Oval when UHS hosted Aquinas in what was set to be one of the matches of the round. The game was always going to be tightly contested and the first quarter was no exception. Both sides struggled to amount much on the scoreboard as Aquinas kicked the only goal of the term to hold a seven-point lead into quarter time. Although the second and third quarters went without either side kicking a goal, the contest was fiercely fought, nonetheless. The margin remained at seven points at the main break and some missed chances in the third quarter meant Aquinas would only stretch their lead to ten by three quarter time. Two goals to one in the last saw Aquinas hold off any surge from UHS as they got the chocolates by 16 points. Meg Dargan, Sophie Patterson and Hannah McLean kicked the goals for Aquinas as Gretta Hankinson booted UHS-VU’s only major. UHS-VU will travel away to take on the Tigers in a huge clash as Aquinas will host North Brunswick in a game that they will be expected to win.

Brunswick Renegades vs Mazenod

Mazenod headed into this game as favourites. They sat third on the ladder with the Renegades down in 6^th. The Renegades were out to prove a point in the opening term as both sides struggled to trouble the scorers. Mazenod holding a lead of just one point into quarter time. Mazenod had plenty of chances in the second quarter to break away from the Renegades, but inaccurate kicking meant that Brunswick were able to stay in the contest. Mazenod managed three behinds for the second quarter as Brunswick kicked the only goal of the first half and held a two-point lead into the main break. Scores were once again hard to come by in the third quarter, but the Renegades were able to make the most of their opportunities, kicking the only goal for the term, to extend their margin to eight point at the final change. The final quarter saw Mazenod turn it up a notch as they pushed for the four points. The story of the day continued however, as they were unable to convert, falling short by two points as they managed one goal and seven behinds for the game. Monica Gray and Vanessa Lussini were the Renegades goalkickers whilst Adele Kerley was Mazenod’s lone goalkicker. The Renegades will play away to an inform Ivanhoe side next week as Mazenod will look to bounce back when they face Richmond Central.

North Brunswick vs Ivanhoe AFC

Ivanhoe had gathered some form in recent weeks and were looking for a big win when they were hosted by the Bulls. Though, early In the contest, it seemed as If the Bulls had other ideas. One goal apiece in the opening term saw the inaccurate Ivanhoe take a slender three-point lead into the first break. Scoring opportunities dried up in the second term as Ivanhoe kicked the only goal to extend their lead at half time to nine points. The third quarter was all Ivanhoe as they peppered the goals relentlessly. Their inaccuracy hurt them however as they kicked one goal and eight behinds for the quarter to take their overall lead out to 23 points at three quarter time. The Bulls fought hard in the final quarter, kicking their second goal of the contest as Ivanhoe added another one. At the final siren, it was Ivanhoe getting home by 25 points. Emily Jane Johnson was massive for the visitors with three goals. For the Bulls, Lauren Field and Andrea Standen were their goalkickers. The Bulls have the almighty task of Aquinas, away from home, next week as Ivanhoe will host the Renegades who are fresh off a big win.

Richmond Central vs St Bedes/Mentone Tigers

The Snakes would continue hunting their first win of the season as the Tigers needed a win to keep up with Aquinas at the top of the ladder. The Tigers went in as clear favourites and showed their class from the opening bounce. The Snakes were kept scoreless in the opening quarter as the Tigers booted two goals to stretch out to an early 15-point lead at quarter time. The Tigers were even better in the second as they added a further four goals to just one behind from the Snakes, which saw the half time margin extend out to 42 points. The Tigers continued where they left off after half time as they booted three third quarter goals to lead by 63 points at the last change. Three further goals to go along with some inaccurate kicking saw the Tigers run away and win by a comfortable 85-point margin. Brittni Donaldson and Chelsea Bowen were excellent up forward for the Tigers kicking four and three goals, respectively. Emily Hinton and Abby Jensen were amongst the Snakes best. The Snakes travel away to face an out of form Mazenod side as the Tigers look to remain on the winners list when they host UHS-VU.
